Tamannaah Is First Choice Of Many Heroes In Kollywood

By: Your Master On: Friday, June 25, 2010

  • Tamannaah, easily the leading and ‘No.1’ actress in Tamil at present, is of the opinion that glamour alone can’t help an actress reach the top slot in any language. “Ultimately, it’s the talent and the acting credentials that count. Glamour, to some extent, helps an actress reach the top slot; but to remain there and to sustain the top position, she needs to be strong in the ‘acting’ department.”

The ‘hot and happening’ gorgeous actress that Tamannaah is, she remains the first choice of many heroes in Kollywood which obviously has kept her call-sheets diaries filled till the end of the next year. Tamannaah is working like a busy-bee, not complaining and vividly aware that besides being glamourous, she needs to display her acting prowess too to sustain her position here.

When asked if she’s known more for her ‘glamour’ than her acting prowess, Tamannaah got philosophical and said that she didn’t count on her glamour quotient alone and was concentrating in acting as well. “One can’t rely on glamour alone for a longer rein at the top; it might get you some offers but you need to be talented enough to sustain your position at the top,” says Tamannaah.

“I realized this very much when I was doing my second film ‘Kalloori’ a few years back. Before committing each film of mine, I intently listen to the story and my character and only then decide on whether to take up my role or not. The role has to appeal to my heart for me to take it,” she says.

I am not in a situation to weep because of a single offer. Some people who do not like my growth in Bollywood is resorting to cheap methods by spreading false rumors.

This film was supposed to be directed by Gowtham Menon and later on they said that this film will be directed by Nishikanth Kamath. There is lot of changes in the story. So I only quit the film and was not sent out as quoted in the rumors.”

Asin style is the method she chooses her film. She chooses the role which suits her. She paired with Ameer Khan in Ghajini and later on paired with Salman Khan in the film Wanted. Now she is pairing in a Hindi film once again with Salman Khan.

This film is directed by Anees Basmi and produced by T Series. The Telugu film Kick is being remade in Tamil with the title Utthamaputhiran. The film which Asin is acting is the remake of this Telugu film. Because of her hectic schedule, she kept away from Tamil cinema. Now she is pairing with Vijay in Kavalkaran directed by Siddique.

Asin who was leaving for Sri Lanka said,” Since the Tamil industry requested me I did not participate in the event held in Sri Lanka. Not going for this event was in my hand. But going for the shooting there is not in my hands.

Initially the film was to shot in Bangkok and later it was changed to Mauritius. Finally it was changed to Sri Lanka. This is also not final. There will be so many problems while planning a film. It is not a healthy thing that if the producer and technicians are affected. That is why I am going to Sri Lanka.

Many are asking me about the friendship with Dhoni. Whenever he is in Mumbai, he never fails to come to my house. Our friendship is so strong. You might have heard that he watched the IPL match in my home theatre.

Apart from this because of my friendship with Amir Khan I was able to get the introduction of James Cameroon. All this happened because of my clean image and healthy friendship. This is my strength and that is why I have the guts to answer your imaginary questions.

With regard to Kavalkaran, 40% of the shooting is over. After completing my first schedule of Hindi shooting I will participate in the shooting of Kavalkaran. You can note it down that this will film be a hat trick because this is my third film with Vijay.

Anoushka debuted as Madhavan’s heroine in the film ‘Rendu’ a few years back, The film, directed by Sundar C, flopped miserably at the box-office, forcing Anoushka to seek solace in Telugu films. She acted in a few hit movies before ‘Arundhati’, which released early last year and broke many a box-office record, became a super-duper hit in Tamil and Telugu.

Thanks to the super success of ‘Arundhati’, Anoushka staged a comeback in Tamil films through ‘Vettaikaran’ which unfortunately proved a dud at the box-office despite Vijay’s presence in the film. Not the one to lose heart, Anoushka starred in Suriya’s ‘Singam’ as Suriya’s heroine. Now that the film has been declared a super-hit by the trade industry, Anoushka is extremely happy.

I Can Read And Write In Hindi-Trisha

  • Trisha may be a well known name down South, but now she is set to make her mark in Bollywood opposite Akshay Kumar in Priyadarshan’s forthcoming Khatta Meetha. Trisha incidentally began her career with a Priyan film, Lesa Lesa, so she’s looking forward to working with the director again.

“I was launched by Priyadarshan seven-and-a-half years ago. I am glad he remembered me when he was doing this film. A debut venture with Akshay Kumar is more than I could have hoped for. Moreover, it is Akshay’s home production,” she says.

Will Khatta Meetha be Trisha’s first attempt at comedy? “In Khatta Meetha, my character does not have a comic track, it’s more serious. All the comedy is handled by Akshay,” she says.Language was a bit of a barrier for the crossover actress, so her voice in the film has been dubbed. “I can read and write Hindi, so reading the script was not difficult.

But I am not good with the spoken language. And since my character needs to be good in Hindi, Priyan sir decided to have it dubbed,” Trisha says. For now, says Trisha, all she can think of is the film’s release. She gushes, “I am nervous as well as excited. In the meantime, I am making the most of my time in Mumbai, shopping without being conscious of my ‘star status’,” she says.

The Clash Between Priyamani And Her Cousin Vidya Balan

By: Your Master On: Wednesday, June 23, 2010

  • Bollywood beauties, beware. Another Southern siren is getting ready to invade Hindi filmdom. This one is Priya Mani, our Vidya Balan’s cousin, and both Southies have Mani Ratnam in common. Vidya did Guru with him and Priya recently made a small but striking appearance in Raavan. Sources, however, say that both girls got a raw deal in terms of footage.

Vidya will not talk, but Priya is happy with her space, “My role couldn’t be cut,” she laughs throatily, “Mani Sir told me it brought colour and vibrancy into the story.” But her monologue where she describes her gangrape by cops has made Bollywood filmmakers sit up and notice Priya. And Ram Gopal Varma has already cast her opposite Tamil superstar Suriya in Rakta Charitra.

Way back in 2006, this Bangalore hottie had won the National Award for a Southern film and was in danger of being typecast as a serious actress. “But I quickly gravitated towards conventional glamorous roles because I no longer had to prove myself as an actress,” she says.

Acting since she was 18, Priya has done many films in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. Now, Hindi films beckon just as they did to Asin before her. “I’m a big Bollywood fan,” admits Priya. Does it help that Vidya Balan is her cousin? “No, I’m not really in touch with Vidya. I’m more in touch with her father. Whenever I visit Mumbai, I make it point to meet him. But I don’t expect them to help me in Bollywood at all...”

Manirathnam Spoke To The Media About Amitabh Bachchan Comment

  • The film Raavanan directed by Manirathnam was released worldwide on 18th of this month. This film was made in Tamil, Hindi and Telugu languages. Abhishek Bachchan did the lead role in the Hindi version which was titled Raavan while the Tamil version Raavanan had Vikram in the lead role. Aishwarya Rai was the heroine in both the versions. Amitabh Bachchan after seeing the film commented on Twitter that some of the important scenes were deleted and because of this Abhishek Bachchan’s role is confusing.

Manirathnam spoke to the media about this.

What is your view on Amitabh Bachchan comment on Twitter?

Amitabh could have called me and told me his views that he twitted. He knows my phone number. Everyone has got the right to express their views on a film. But I will accept the views of the audience.

How did you the idea directing a film based on Ramayana?

Ramayana was written 2000 years ago. But the characters in this epic were suitable for the present society. There is truth in these characters. So I got the idea making a film on this few years ago.

You have shown Raavanan has a good person in this film?

This film is not fully based on Ramayana. I have taken some incidents from Ramayana and woven a story. There are people like the tough guy Veera in the society even now. I have shown their affection and romance.

Was there any difference while directing your other films and this film?

Whenever I direct a film, I have a feeling that it is my first film. I had the same feeling when I directed Raavanan. For each film I make a route and journey in it. I worked in this film with lot of expectations. Since the whole story happens in forests I travelled a lot for outdoor shooting. Since rain and storm was connected to the story, we experienced this very much.

You have made Aishwarya Rai go into a cave and deep pit. Did she cooperate?

Aishwarya Rai was deeply involved in this film. She was not reluctant to act in any scenes since she was a woman. She worked hard like other actors.

How did the audience receive this film especially Mumbai audience?

When the audience comes into the theatre they should be absorbed into the film at the sixth minute itself. This has happened in the case of Raavanan. The taste of the audience is same throughout India. Mumbai audience also enjoyed the scenes which our audience enjoyed.

Is the crux ready for your next film?

There will always be two or three crux inside me always. I will decide which will be my next film among these.

You have seen the films directed by new directors. Who has attracted you?

Lot of talented directors have come in Tamil now. India’s No 1 directors are here. I am really proud about this.I liked the film Subramaniapuram and Paruthiveeran very much.

Vikram Spoken Out Against Amitabh Bachchan's Comments

  • Three days after the release of Abhishek Bachchan starrer Raavan, his father, actor Amitabh Bachchan, has lamented that editing glitches ruined his son's performance, even as some of the key players of the film have come to the defense of director Mani Ratnam. The much-hyped film, starring Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan opposite Abhishek, opened to mixed reviews.

Abhishek's role as Beera, the volatile anti-hero, was panned by many critics. Amitabh tweeted that the “sad” editing ruined Abhishek's role, but Raavan's other star Vikram and cinematographer Santosh Sivan have spoken out against Amitabh's comments. “Lot of merited film edited out, causing inconsistent performance and narrative. Abhishek's erratic behavior was due to symbolic 10 heads visually appearing and each giving him different attitudes to adopt for a situation, he would then finally shake them off and decide.

“It's sad; in the edit you only see the after-effect of that thinking process, hence inconsistent. In the edit, all the visual heads got cut and you see a confused Beera expression and wonder why? [sic],” tweeted Amitabh. Sivan, who received universal praise for his camera work in Raavan said the director's prerogative cannot be questioned by anyone.

Vikram, who received good reviews for his role as Veeraiyya in Raavanan, the same character as Abhishek's in the Hindi version, said the audience was the ultimate judge. Amitabh, who tweeted for a second time during the day, accused the media of misinterpreting his statement as an affront to Ratnam.

    Tamil Movie Review: Ravanan

By: Your Master On: Saturday, June 19, 2010
  • Share The Gag

  • Mani Rathnam’s Ravanan is the story of an innocent woman made as a pawn in the clash between the police and the people living in forests.

The kidnap of Rahini (Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan) by Veera (Vikram) sets the tone for the film. DSP Dev (Prithviraj), who is also Raahini's husband enters the forest in search of his wife and to kill his foe Veera.

A flashback scene tells us about the tragedy of Veera's sister (Priyamani), who was molested by the police in the pursuit of capturing Veera. Veera kidnaps Raahini to avenge Dev, who had devastated the life of his sister. Veera unexpectedly falling for beautiful Raahini comes as a twist in the tale. He opens up his mind to Raahini, who has slowly starts empathizing his struggle against the police.

The gripping climax tells you as to what happened to Veeraa, Dev, and Raahini. It also deals with the suspicion of Dev about Raahini.

The eerie surrounding of the Adhirappalli waterfalls and the dangerous forest areas have been capturised in a spectacular manner. The script moves fast with kidnap, hunt and the oscillation of Veera. Raahini’s romantic life and the tragedy of Veera’s sister have been told in flashback in a telling manner. The visual beauty achieved by Santhosh Sivan’s camera work and the awesome music by A.R. Rahman make quite an impact.

Mani Rathnam makes his script and characters do the job. Suhasini’s dialogues add value to the script.

However, the characters other than Veera, Raagini and Dev have not been shaped up well. The background of Veera and his people are not shown convincingly. The emotional drama between Veera and Raahini could have been more powerful.

Aishwarya Rai stands out with her beautiful looks and acting skills. She gets into the skin of her character and makes it quite credible. She is very good at showing subtle emotions. She has also admirably done physically draining sequences like trekking.

Vikram has delivered one of his best performances. His body language, facial expressions, and powerful dialogue delivery, expressive eyes help him making Veera closer to the audience. The moment of oscillation towards beautiful Aishwarya has been portrayed quite well.

Prithviraj looks smart in uniform and acts well. But his expressions look monotonous. Karthick and Prabhu are just about okay. Priyamani, in a brief appearance, impresses.

Santhosh Sivan and A.R. Rahman are the other heroes of the film. Sivan's camera work is spectacular and Rahman's music is stunning. The picturisation of songs Usurey Pogudhey and Kattu Chirukki are commandable.

Ravanan is watchable movie despite the inadequacies in terms of making the backdrop strong and clear. The performances by Vikram and Aish, music, and cinematography make the movie worth watching.

I was away from cinema because of the recent elections in Andhra Pradesh. Now I am relaxed and when I got this offer, I agreed to act. Though I was born in Andhra, only Tamil Nadu gave me the identity.

Since I wanted to do something to the State I was born, I joined Telugu Desam. But people who could not bear my growth made me loose in the elections. They gave me so much trouble even without bothering that I am a woman.

Those who could not go against me in the political field indirectly gave me trouble. Because of this I was very much depressed. However I am still working for the welfare of the people. With regard to Kushboo entering politics I am really happy. But politics is different and cinema is different.

After joining politics you can’t take rest as you like. We have to roam from place to place in the hot sun and reach the people. Kushboo use this chance to help the women folks. Many are asking me whether I will join AIDMK and meet Jayalalitha. If they give due importance and call me then we will see.”

I desperately needed to get back to my reading habits and felt short stories was the perfect way to put me on track. Not only would it help to retain my interest, but also get to read a lot of stories at one go,so I just went for Grishams collection of stories.

My favourite author used to be Sidney Sheldon, now its Dan Brown, Jeffery Archer and Khaled Hosseini who wrote The Kite Runner. If you notice the one thing common among all my favourites are that they write fiction and the pace they maintain is racy.

That’s what I like in my books. I don’t like to read anything that puts me off to sleep. Having said that, I must say I enjoy reading all the Chicken Soup for the Soul series. The short stories in it are really touching and sweet, and leaves me teary eyed every time I read them.
