    Salient Features

Previously designed as ‘Robo’, Shankar initially sought Kamal to play the star cast. Unfortunately couple of issues that cropped up made Shankar give up the attempt and destiny had its final say. Shankar and Rajini, the duo that delivered the fantabulous hit of the year “SHIVAJI” recombine in their new venture “ENDHIRAN”.

In line with Kamal, Vikaram and other leading in the industry, Rajini has attempted severe efforts on the make-up portion of his attire. Shankar applauds her efforts and endurance for the past two years in completing Endhiran.

Activities of the robot were conferred by the labors of ‘Animatronics’. Rajini was brought into a mold similar to the one of Arnold for his movie “Terminator”.

Director Shankar boasts of no flimsy, political hues, or dialogs in Endhiran, However, there is a special note he has to say, “It is Rajini’s favorite dialog of the movie: Creativity of man brought in two special things in this world. One would be you and the other would be I.”

Created with 1,500 computer aided visuals, exquisite techniques known as motion control, 3D animations and another few have been used in the creation of images worth a humpty appraises. ‘Madhankarthi’, son of Vairamuthu has also attempted to script up two songs in the movie. A.R.R has tuned up six songs and Vairamuthu’s lyrics are best appreciated in a song, where Endhiran is instilled with feelings of romance and lust within him.

Get yourself the new mechanized feel…. The feel of ENDHIRAN!!!

  • Asin Thottumkal shocked her best friend Sridevi when she declined a plum offer made by the latter's husband, filmmaker Boney Kapoor. In Bollywood, Sridevi and Boney are like Asin's Godparents, because when she was alone in the city and living in their building, the couple really took care of her.

We have seen Sridevi sending home-cooked food for Asin and also constantly checking if she needed any help in Mumbai. So, when Boney approached Asin with the film, he never expected to hear a no. The industry grapevine is also buzzing with gossip that this decision might hamper the relationship that Asin and Sridevi share.

A friend of the actress said, "Asin starts shooting for a South film whose working title is Bodyguard and then she has the second schedule for Bhushan Kumar's Ready to shoot. She also has two more Bollywood offers that are hush-hush. Asin doesn't really have any time right now till next year to sign up for another film. She likes to complete one project at a time. Unfortunately, Boney's offer came at a time when she had already reserved her dates for other films. She had to politely say a no to him."

Asin had to also say no to filmmaker Vipul Shah as well for the same reason. And there are other offers that she could not accept because her endorsements have gone up. "Fingers are crossed that her decisions don't cost her dearly," said the source. "She has been shooting in Sri Lanka and down South, so she hasn't got the chance to gel with Sridevi and Boney. That might also be adding fuel to the fire." Asin could not be contacted for a comment. Sridevi too remained elusive.

  • That Trisha is doing her second film in Bollywood, the remake of Gautham Menon's Ye Maya Chesave is a known fact. But what's news is that the actress will be dubbing her own lines in Hindi!

In her Bollywood debut, Khatta Meetha, Trisha had made no effort to hide the fact that her voice was dubbed. "But this time, I'm doing my own Hindi lines. I'm working very hard on them," says the petite actress.

And, she is excited about the project as a whole. Says Trisha, "We start shooting by the end of September. We'll be shooting in Mumbai and New York. Prateik and I did a test shoot together and we got along just fine.

I loved what I saw. Something tells me my pairing with Prateik will work." Though Trisha's Hindi debut was a bit of a fiasco, she has no regrets. "It was a big break for me. So, no regrets at all. It's time to move on. Prateik is a very sweet co-star and he's added his own personality to what Simbu, did in the Tamil version," chirps the actress and signs off.

  • Kamal Haasan’s guru, K Balachander wanted to go to Trivandrum and take part in the Kerala state government organized function to honour the legendary actor. But due to his ill health he could not take part in the function

However, KB made up for it with another of his open letter addressed to Kamal. In a seven page letter, KB begins by saying “I have stopped travelling because my bones protest. I have stopped speaking at public functions as my memory betrays me.

I have stopped attending film related functions, as I find that I’m not in sync with the content and character of current day cinema and so feel out dated and even out of place".

It is a very well written letter which eulogizes Kamal Haasan. One of the sentences is “Rajini is a phenomenon, Kamal is an icon, a monarch of all he surveys!” KB concludes by saying “Thank you Kamal for ruling my heart! Thank you God for giving us Kamal"

“My audiences and fans know me for a long time. I must say that I’ve been lucky with extremely kind people from the film fraternity and they all remember my good work and not too much of my bad work”, says the actress with a smile.

In Telugu, Nami is happy that her last release Simha is a huge hit and two of her films in which she has well-defined roles are ready to hit the screens.

  • The family members of Obul Reddy, a Anantapur-based factionist and an opponent of the slain leader Paritala Ravi in the real life, complained that filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma failed to check the facts before scripting his controversial film Raktha Charitra and that he never bothered to meet them, though he did the same with the slain leader’s family and that of Maddelacheruvu Suri, the prime accused in the killing of Paritala.

“We got to know through the media that the movie has scenes that are not acceptable to my clients. We contacted him several times but there was no response and hence we sent the legal notice,” said N.R.K. Mohan, advocate of Obul Reddy’s family.

The legal notice was sent to Varma by Uma Rani and Usha Rani, sisters of Obul Reddy.

The filmmaker also received death threats over phone on Sunday from unidentified people who claimed to be supporters of Obul Reddy’s family.

Informing that he will lodge a police complaint in Mumbai soon, RGV, in true filmi style, said, “There is no way one gets to know what I am going to portray in the movie. Netherlands Crushed India On World Cup

  • Germany had their work cut out to beat New Zealand 2-0 whereas Olympic and world champions Netherlands crushed India 7-1 on the second day of the women's World Cup on Monday.

Maartje Paumen scored the second hat-trick of the tournament in Rosario as favourites Netherlands ran riot in the second half after Argentina's Luciana Aymar had hit three in her team's 5-2 win over South Africa in Pool B on Sunday.

The Dutch quickly went ahead in their Pool A opener with Marilyn Agliotti's volley but India hit back in the 24th minute through Rani Rampal.

Parity was short-lived, though, as goals from Ellen Hoog and Kim Lammers gave Netherlands a 3-1 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Paumen scored from two penalty corners either side of a penalty stroke and Lammers hit her second from the top of the circle.

Germany took a quarter of an hour to break down New Zealand's resistance with a fine goal by Celine Wilde who tipped the ball in off the right post from open play.

Two minutes later Tina Bachmann increased the Germans' lead from a penalty corner but that was the only one out of eight they would go on to convert.

New Zealand exerted increasing pressure during a scoreless second half in which Anita Punt came closest when her shot hit the post in the 52nd minute with no-one near enough to take the rebound.

As time ran out New Zealand's Gemma Flynn shot across the face of goal then had another effort saved by goalkeeper Kristina Reynolds.

Twice champions Australia were playing Japan in the late match.

Venus Williams Return To The US Open

  • Seven-times major winner Venus Williams is choosing to accentuate the positives in her return to competition at the US Open after sitting out two months with a left knee injury.

Thrilled to be back on centre stage inside Arthur Ashe Stadium for her first test since the Wimbledon quarterfinals, Williams dispatched Italy's Roberta Vinci 6-4, 6-1 as the curtain went up on night action at the Open.

"This is the event to come to, you know, New York, the opening night of the US Open," the 30-year-old Williams told reporters. "It's really an honor. I love doing it. I've had the opportunity on a lot of occasions. Everyone's watching."

Williams treated the opening night crowd to some of her trademark power, belting 10 aces, and a lacy black party dress with fringe on the bottom that befit the occasion.

While her look was picture-perfect, Williams was not sure her preparation would prove first rate.

"Not having played any matches wasn't ideal," she admitted. "Obviously, practice is so much different from a match. I felt like I was hitting well in practice, but to translate into a match is something completely different.

"But I think I handled it well and I'm just looking to build momentum going to the next matches."

Williams tried to focus on the positives. "I guess my only advantage would be that I'm hopefully mentally a lot fresher and physically, hopefully, a lot fresher than maybe my opponents who played all summer," she said.

"You know, I've got to try to look at it in a positive way and bank on my experience. That helps a lot because I've had a lot of winning experience," the twice US champion said.

Williams said she regretted the absence of her sister and doubles partner, world number one Serena Williams, who had to skip the Open because of a foot injury.

She said she loves to play doubles with her sister and would have been sorely tempted to join forces with her in Flushing Meadows, especially after they came up short together at Wimbledon, even though it would have been hard on her knee.

Even that disappointment was turned into a positive. Asked if it would be better for her knee that she is not playing doubles at the Open, Williams replied with a smile: "Absolutely."

  • After his team’s loss in the tri-nation ODI series, Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni sought divine blessings in home city Monday.

Dhoni went to Deori temple near Ranchi with his wife Sakshi, father Pan Singh and other family members and prayed there for 15 minutes. He arrived in Ranchi from Sri Lanka Sunday.

India had lost the tournament final to Sri Lanka by 74 runs.

There is popular feeling that Dhoni’s performance declines if he fails to visit the Deori temple, around 40 km from Ranchi on the Ranchi-Jamshedpur national highway.

Dhoni arrived in Ranchi with his newly-wed wife after marriage on July 7 but he could not get time to visit the Deori temple. India had not performed well in test series too against Sri Lanka.

“Dhoni is a regular visitor to the temple. Even family members admit that Dhoni’s performance goes down if he fails to visit Deori temple,” a priest of Deori temple told reporters.

Dhoni returned to Ranchi after visiting the temple, and later caught a flight to New Delhi.

Younis Khan Sent Legal Notice To British Tabloid

  • Pakistan`s former captain Younis Khan has sent a legal notice to the British tabloid which had alleged that he had also signed brothers Mazhar and Azhar Majeed, who act as agents for several Pakistani cricketers.

Reliable sources close to Younis told reporters, the former captain instructed his lawyer, Ahmed Qayyum to issue the notice to `News of the World` for publishing a report which said that Azhar and Mazhar were the agents of Younis.

The source said Younis was one of the few Pakistani players who had refused to sign Azhar and Majeed as agents for them in England.

Mazhar Majeed is at the centre of a new match-fixing scandal and was arrested and later released on bail for trying to defraud bookmakers.

Mazhar claimed that he had paid bribes to some Pakistani players, including captain Salman Butt, for spot fixing in the fourth Test against England at Lords.

Mazhar`s claims have set off a major investigation by the ICC and the Scotland Yard into fixing allegations.

"Yes the notice has been sent and in it Younis has demanded that the newspaper publish a denial and also pay damages of USD 10,000 pounds towards the flood relief fund for the millions of Pakistanis displaced by the floods," the source said.

"The brothers approached Pakistani players to sign them on during the 2006 tour and Younis refused," the source added.

The brothers are believed to have formalised their relations with members of the Pakistan squad on the 2006 tour and, though it remains unclear whether any official agreement was signed, over a number of years Azhar and Mazhar have handled various sponsorship and marketing contracts for the players in the UK.

Younis stepped down as captain of the Pakistan side last November after an ODI series loss to New Zealand, claiming that he no longer had control over his players.

He was called up for the ODI series in Australia where he played under Mohammad Yousuf`s leadership. Soon after the series he was punished by a PCB inquiry committee which ruled that he would not be picked for future Pakistan squads for an indefinite period of time.

Younis appealed against the decision when it was referred back to the PCB by a tribunal. It has remained there, however, reportedly due to personal differences between PCB chairman Ijaz Butt and Younis.

Despite calls by a number of ex-players, Younis has not returned either to the Test or ODI side since the Australia series.

  • Sassy Hollywood actress Jennifer Aniston isn’t making headlines for the right reasons. Her joking statement of calling herself a retard on national US television has drawn a lot of flak, especially from many international groups fighting for the rights and wellness for the disabled.

The former wife of Brad Pitt used the word on the Live with Regis and Kelly show while saying, “Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!” And the Special Olympics Committee, a global organisation that hosts bi-annual games for sportstars with disabilities, is miffed at Jennifer’s choice of word.

“The pervasive use of the R-word, even in an off-the-cuff, self-deprecating manner, dehumanises people with intellectual disabilities and perpetuates painful stereotypes that are a great source of suffering and negative stigma,” an official of the games has been quoted as saying. Meanwhile, taking up the baton of this international uproar against Jennifer is Akshay Kumar — the brand ambassador of Special Olympics Bharat. The Bollywood Khiladi is starting a novel campaign ‘Ban the R Word’ to demand a ban on the usage of the word ‘retard’.

Akki has been deeply pained by the word’s usage. And he will leave no stone unturned to make ‘Ban the R Word’ sensitise people to be humane while referring to people with disabilities, specially children. Akshay will also root for highlighting the need to accept mentally and physically challenged people as equal society members and recognise and encourage their abilities.

The actress reveals that when encountered by star kids, many a times she gets stuck with words, “I don’t know how to start or take the conversation with the kids, who are of my age and even older than me sometimes,” laughs the actress.

Its interesting to note that in an industry where actresses love to hide their real age and behave like teenagers, Kangna talks candidly about her ‘aunty’ feeling. While we hope that Kangna overcomes this problem all we can say is ‘kitne ajeeb rishte hain yahan pe...’

  • If you thought that Ram Gopal Varma is one man who believes in hard hitting movies and controversial statements, see this. It is one of those age old pictures when Ramu (the person who lifted his leg) was a keen martial arts person and here he is, showing his prowess with one of his kicks. Whether it is his discipline in martial arts or it is his natural thought process, Ramu has always been branded as the offbeat and rather revolutionary moviemaker. Given his penchant for martial arts, perhaps he should come up with a film on those lines

    Pakistan Suspension From International Cricket

By: Your Master On: Monday, August 30, 2010

  • The `spot-fixing` scandal involving Pakistani cricketers threatens the very existence of the sport, according to the British media which on Monday called for Pakistan`s suspension from international cricket and life bans on the guilty players.

Britain`s newspapers said cricket`s reputation has been mired by this incident and Pakistan should be suspended from cricket by the ICC to restore the image of the game.

"There can be zero tolerance for cheats, even if their dishonesty is genuinely limited to bowling a no-ball to order," The Sun wrote in its editorial.

"Pakistan must be suspended from cricket, which sadly means scrapping the forthcoming one-day series. The shadow of corruption has hung over Pakistani cricket for 15 years. This scandal must be the last," it said.

The Daily Mail termed the scandal as the worst ever scam to hit cricket and called the International Cricket Council to impose a life ban on the players if found guilty.

"Such a purge would be tremendously painful in the short term but it is the only way integrity and belief can be restored," it said.

The Daily Mirror said even though it is disappointing for the cricket lovers to see the sport plagued by scams, there is also a need to educate the young cricketers to help them resist such temptations.

"Money in one form or another sometimes seems to be taking over every aspect of sport.”

"More must be done to help players and athletes, who are often very young, resist temptation and stand up to blackmail or intimidation.”

"We also need to recapture the spirit of fair play that seems to have been driven out by soaring profits," it wrote.

The Guardian felt cheating in cricket thrives in many forms and it is high time the ICC sets its house in order.

"Cricket cheating thrives in many forms: charges of match-fixing and betting coups coexist with a culture of ball-tampering, sledging, time-wasting and refusal to accept umpires` decisions," it said.

"Cricket must put its house in order fast. Nothing undermines the credibility of any sport more than the suspicion that what you are watching is in fact a fix."

`The Times` said the allegations were a bitter blow to Pakistanis and urged the cricketing world not to isolate "a troubled nation".

"These are dark days for cricket, for professional sport, and for Pakistan," it said.

"In a time when Pakistan is balanced on an existential knife-edge, cricket represents liberalism rather than extremism; international engagement rather than isolation; the celebration of graceful civilisation rather than the cold nihilism of tribal and religious strife.”

"Sport may only be sport, but in Pakistan cricket provides a vital bridge of engagement and mutual respect with the wider world.”

"The worst thing that could happen now would be for the rest of the world to give up on Pakistan, in cricket, or in anything else."

The Independent also felt the mis-governance of Pakistan cricket, which doesn`t have any inspirational figure, is also responsible for the dwindling status of cricket in the volatile nation.

"This is more than the age-old tale of youth corrupted and disorientated by bright lights and luxury," it said.

"Misgoverned for decades, Pakistan has a political class that contains few people whom anyone seriously looks up to for moral inspiration -- hence, in part, the almost fanatical devotion to a sport that supposedly incarnates the ideal of fair play.”

"The people of Pakistan deserve better than to have it rubbed in their faces that this is not the case."

The Daily Telegraph said though the incident seems to have tarnished the image of Pakistan but the allegations has in fact affected the integrity of the whole sport.

"Many will see it as a mirror image of the political corruption that is endemic to that country," it said, calling for anyone involved to be punished.

"Only then can a start be made to remove the stain on cricket`s reputation," the paper said.

Scotland Yard Recovered Cash On Hotel

  • Cash exceeding their daily allowance was recovered from the hotel rooms of the Pakistani cricketers implicated in the "spot fixing" scandal during a raid conducted by the Scotland Yard here.

"Mr (Yawar) Saeed received a phone call at the team`s hotel in Swiss Cottage, north London, at about 7.30pm telling him that two police officers were waiting to see him. Police spent two hours searching rooms, including that of Mr Butt and several players, before confiscating the phones of the captain and Aamer and Asif," a report in a newspaper said.

"Officers also found large numbers of bank notes in the rooms of unnamed players which exceeded the daily maintenance payment made to the cricketers by their employers. It is not known if these bank notes relate to the allegations," it said.

The Scotland Yard detectives yesterday visited the Pakistan dressing room immediately after the third day`s play in the fourth Test against England to question the players after the sting operation exposed `spot-fixing` and the alleged nexus between the players and bookies.

Police also questioned Mazhar Majeed, a 35-year-old agent, about allegations that he accepted 150,000 in cash from undercover reporters posing as a gambling syndicate. He was bailed out without any charge last night.

Detectives took statements from skipper Salman Butt, bowlers Mohammad Aamer and Mohammad Asif, and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal after Majeed was seen on film to give precise details of when three "no-balls" would be delivered by Aamer and Asif during the Test match at Lord`s that ended yesterday.

    Pakistan Cricket Team In Spot-Fixing

  • Pushed to the wall by allegations of `spot-fixing` in the Lord`s Test, the Pakistan cricket team could find itself in more trouble as reports here claim that the side`s players also rigged the opening Test against England, which the hosts won by a massive 354 runs.

According to a British tabloid, Scotland Yard`s Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick was told about Pakistani players being involved in match fixing a month ago.

"... police were told a month ago about match-fixing in the England v Pakistan Test series. Scotland Yard`s Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick was tipped off over alleged corruption in the first match (July 29 to August 1)," the tabloid claimed.

"An intelligence source warned that several Pakistani cricketers were fixing events within the match, held at Trent Bridge, Nottingham," the report stated.

"Ms Dick, head of the Specialist Crime Directorate, was still assessing that information yesterday when a News of the World probe exposed a Pakistani match-fixing ring."

Quoting a source, the newspaper said that an informer had given "credible" information about match-fixing by Pakistan players to the police here.

"The information given to Assistant Commissioner Dick was credible. But such an investigation would have soaked up a huge amount of resources, with no guarantee of a result," the source was quoted as saying.

"The intelligence was still being analysed to see if there was any possible way forward. It now transpires that corruption has continued.

"With what emerged yesterday and the information supplied four weeks ago, it`s hard to see how people will look at cricket the same again. Millions will have been watching on Sunday wondering if it was real or not," he added.

The new revelations are bound to damage the Pakistan cricket team`s reputation even more after a sting operation "exposed" `spot-fixing` by pacers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamir, who were allegedly paid by a bookie Mazhar Majeed to send down no balls during the lost Lord`s Test against England.

Majeed was arrested on Saturday but was released on bail last night. The Pakistani cricketers implicated in the scandal, including captain Salman Butt, Asif, Aamir and wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, have had their mobile phones confiscated by the police.

You are number one in Telugu. Now you are upcoming heroine in Tamil. How do you see this?

Number one depends on that how a film fairs at the box office. Since my Telugu film Magadheera was a super hit, my career graph rose. That’s all. I am also selecting a role in Tamil that will be spoken about. It is enough if I get a super hit film like that.

Here you will be facing stiff competition with actresses like Trisha, Thamanna and Asin?

Let it be. I will accept only the opportunities that come my way. I will not grab their offers. Moreover Thamanna and Asin are also beautiful.

Bharathiraja has the habit of keeping his heroine’s name beginning with R. Did he not change your name?

I don’t know. He has not asked me anything. I also did not change my name. Bharathiraja is a big legend. Bommalattam is a good experience.

    How is Karthi?

Very friendly type. His brother and father are hit artists. In spite of this he keeps on telling that he is proud because he is acting with me. His humbleness will not be there in others. He is very sincere and soft. He keeps on praising me.

What do you think about rumours?

First I want to say one thing. There are no rumours about me so far. I will behave in the right manner with my co actors. I will not chat unnecessarily or send SMS. So there is no chance of rumours.

Is it true that you are acting Vijay in a film produced by Lingusamy?

  • It was well known that ‘Robot’ or ‘Enthiran’ was offered to Shah Rukh Khan initially probably after Kamal Hassan denied acting in the film. Shah Rukh Khan cited that the film’s script was immature and so he would not act in the film.

Later, Robot was offered to Rajnikanth who did it gracefully and made it a Rs. 200 crore film (the highest in India). Rajnikanth made it bigger than ever and Shankar released the film in Hindi where there was a catch. The problem was unexpected and Shankar had to talk to Shah Rukh Khan to solve the problem.

Shah Rukh Khan had already held the title ‘Robot’ which was registered under his name and was going to start a film on the same title soon but while Shankar spoke to him. Shah Rukh’s response was awaited. Shah Rukh Khan, who is known to express solidarity with his South Indian counterparts, was thought to act differently on parting with the title.

Shah Rukh Khan, as his own self, offered the title to Shankar and declared that he would not want the title in the future. Hence, Enthiran will release with the same name ‘Robot’ in Hindi, Telugu and Malayalam.

"Sharon had heard about Mallika and from the time they arrived at the function, the two were inseparable. They sat together and right till the moment the event started, kept chatting about the work they are doing respectively for films and philanthropy. Post the event too they bonded again," says the source. When contacted, Mallika confirmed the news to us.

But what's also interesting about this development is that our sources reveal that Sharon, who is also a film producer, might have discussed the proposition of casting Mallika in one of her films. Gossip is that the film might also have Sharon playing a meaty role.

"They were definitely talking about being friends from then on and planning how they should catch up soon. Sharon is always looking for new scripts to cast talents from across the world. Looks like Mallika has managed to charm Sharon as they have definitely had a talk on working together. The hottest girl in the West pairing up with the oomphy actress from the East will be a good combination to see," says the informer.
