Archie Panjabi Won Emmy Awards


Indian origin English actress Archie Panjabi took home the best suppporting actress in a drama series at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards for her role in ’The Good Wife’.

Archie, known for her roles in movies like ’East is East’ and ’Bend it like Beckham’, was pitted for the prestigious US television award against the likes of Rose Byrne (’Damages’), Sharon Gless (’Burn Notice’), Elisabeth Moss and Christina Hendricks (both for ’Mad Men’) and co-star Christine Baranski for ’The Good Wife’.

The actress starred in 2005 in ’The Constant Gardener’ and played a part in critically acclaimed films like ’A Mighty Heart’ in 2007 and ’Yasmin’ written by Simon Beaufoy, who also scripted the Oscar-winning ’Slumdog Millionaire’.

Panjabi won the Best Actress for her role in ’Yasmin’ in 2004 at the Reims Festival in 2006 and was awarded the Shooting Star Award at the Berlin International Film Festival 2005. The award is given to actors who are seen as "the most exciting and emerging actors from across Europe" (European Film Promotion).

The award-winning actress graduated from Brunel University, England, with a degree in Management Studies (BSc).

The series ’Modern Family’, a mockumentary about three Los Angeles families, won the prize for best TV comedy at the Emmys, while ’Mad Men’, which charts the social changes of the 1960s through the prism of a New York advertising agency, won the prize for best TV drama for the third year in a row.

It was the first time that ’Modern Family’ has won the top prize at the Emmys. The series also picked up two other prizes: best supporting actor for Eric Stonestreet and best writing.

’The Daily Show’, hosted by Jon Stewart, was named as the best variety series.

The prize for lead actor in a comedy series went to Jim Parsons for this role in ’The Big Bang Theory’, while ’Nurse Jackie’s’ Edie Falco was named best lead actress in a comedy series.

Kyra Sedgwick of ’The Closer’ was named best dramatic actress, while Bryan Cranston of ’Breaking Bad’ was the best actor in a drama.

The TV musical Glee gained some joy at the star-studded ceremony, with Jane Lynch getting the supporting comedy actress award and Ryan Murphy winning the comedy directors’ trophy.

Al Pacino won best actor in a mini-series about the life and work of physician-assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian. George Clooney won the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award in recognition of his exceptional efforts to mobilise the entertainment industry during crisis situations.(IANS)
