Amy Winehouse was found dead at the weekend

  • Amy-WinehouseAn autopsy on British singer Amy Winehouse, who was found dead at the weekend, will be carried out Monday, police said, as her parents thanked well-wishers at a makeshift shrine outside the 27-year-old’s north London home.

As record industry executives reported a surge in sales of the singer’s music and speculation swirled about the release of a possible posthumous album, her father Mitch flew in from New York to visit the shrine.

Surrounded by television crews and well-wishers, he read the dozens of condolence messages and walked along banks of teddy bears, flowers -- and the occasional bottle of vodka -- left by fans of the troubled singer.

"Thank you for coming," he told the fans. "It means so much to me and my family."

Police have described the singer’s death as "unexplained" but her battle with alcohol and drugs was well-documented, including in one of her best-known songs "Rehab," in which she sang, "They tried to make me go to rehab but I said no, no, no."

An inquest into her death will be opened and adjourned later Monday.

Winehouse slid from being a chirpy teenage singer from a north London Jewish family to someone who could barely walk at her final concert performance in Serbia.

She won critical acclaim after the release of her debut album "Frank" in 2003 before becoming a worldwide phenomenon with the success of "Back to Black."

The Sun newspaper said she was found dead in her bed at around 1500 GMT Saturday, some six hours after she had last phoned her management team.

Winehouse’s death has sparked a surge in demand for her music.

British music retailer HMV predicted Monday that she would be number one next week as sales of Back to Black, which won five Grammys, continue to grow.

The company said many people had downloaded the album online but many would want to buy CDs to feel a "more tangible and closer connection with Amy."

"It’s something that we tend to see when any great music legend or rock star passes," said HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo.

The Daily Telegraph newspaper reported Monday that material recorded before Winehouse’s death could be released as a posthumous album, citing sources who said Winehouse had recorded "a lot of material" and that her parents would have the final say on whether a new album is to be released.

Winehouse’s spokesman told Reuters there was currently no confirmation of the release of a third album. "I know there’s material about, but no one’s talked about it," he said.

Her recording company, Island Records, a subsidiary of Universal Music Group had no comment about the possibility of a posthumous album.

Monday morning, Universal Music Group had substituted their homepage at www.umusic.co.uk with a black and white image of the star.

Tributes to Winehouse from celebrities including Russell Brand, Lily Allen and Stephen Fry poured in from Twitter over the weekend.

British singer M.I.A and American rapper Big Boi both released songs dedicated to Winehouse.

M.I.A released a song entitled "27" online, which likely refers to the age at which Winehouse died and the "Forever 27" club of musicians who have passed away at that age, including Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and Janis Joplin.

Big Boi, who forms part of the duo Outkast, uploaded a remix of Winehouse’s hit "Tears Dry On Their Own" to his website, with the message "R.I.P Amy."

Kareena Kapoor finalised for Madhurs Heroine

  • Madhur BhandarkarThe movie was initially meant for her; then due to some problems with script requirements Kareena Kapoor opted out of Madhur Bhandarkar’s ambitious project Heroine . And now after much hue and cry, the sizzling beauty is back in the film. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan s pregnancy, although a celebration in personal front, turned out to be a major block for the makers of the film.

The actress had even shot for a week for the movie and later dropped the project following her good news . The fallout proved to be quite taxing, emotionally and professionally, for the director, for whom Heroine was a dream project. The film team then went on to announce that the film has been on hold for the time being while names of top leading ladies in the industry were considered for the movie.

And now finally the wait and tension is over, especially for Bhandarkar and Kareena has been finalised for Heroine . According to sources, recently UTV s CEO Siddharth Roy Kapur along with Heroine s writer Niranjan Iyengar met Kareena in Hyderabad. She was there to meet her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan, who was shooting for Cocktail .

Once there, Kapur and Iyengar managed to convince the actress to come back in Heroine . Although Kareena gave her nod, she put out few conditions. While she agreed to do snorting, drinking and smoking scenes, Kareena refused to do explicit lovemaking scenes with Arjun Rampal and Arunoday Singh - as she was not comfortable in doing extremely bold scenes.

Now only problem is that Madhur has to sit again and bring some changes in the script to suit Kareena s preferences. Anyways, the Heroine case is almost solved....

  • Rohit Shetty2003 was a watershed year for Ajay Devgn when he appeared in a hat trick of action films - Qayamat , Gangaajal and Zameen . Ever since then he has worked in a few dramatic outings like Khakee , Apaharan and Aakrosh to name a few but hardcore action was certainly missing from his repertoire. Now that he has returned with his Zameen director Rohit Shetty in Singham , Ajay is happy to be revisiting that genre all over again which made him the superstar that he is today.

"It was Rohit who had seen the Tamil version of Singham and wanted to make it for Hindi. When he came with the film s script to me, I was very happy with it. In any case it had been eight long years since I did a hardcore action film. Rohit said that he wanted me to be in his version of Singham and I was game for it", says Ajay.

Rohit had actually hit upon this idea when he was filming Golmaal 3 . It was during a casual conversation on the sets of the film when he brought up the film s idea with Ajay. The actor hadn t seen the original but he felt that the film had in it to be adapted for all- India sensibilities as well.

Since Rohit had earlier made quite a few comedies with Ajay, namely Golmaal series, All The Best & Sunday and would soon be beginning work on Bol Bachchan , it was always on the cards that the duo would return with an action flick soon.

"We have always gone by whatever has come our way", says Rohit, "We never thought ki chalo yeh banaate hain ya phir woh try karte hai. Whenever a good script has come our way, we have picked it up. Singham was one such film."

NASA have discovered a tiny new moon

  • new moonHouston: NASA astronomers, while searching for rings around the dwarf planet Pluto, have discovered a tiny new moon around the planet, photos from the Hubble Space Telescope showed.

The moon, which has been temporarily named P4, was spotted in a Hubble survey searching for rings around Pluto.

The tiny satellite, the fourth and smallest one, is estimated to be between 13 to 34 kilometers wide.

For comparison, Pluto’s largest moon Charon is 1,043 km across. The dwarf planet’s other moons, Nix and Hydra, range between 32 to 113 km across.

"I find it remarkable that Hubble’s cameras enabled us to see such a tiny object so clearly from a distance of more than 5 billion km," Mark Showalter of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, Calif said in a statement.

Showalter led this observational survey with Hubble.

Pluto’s new moon is located between the orbits of Nix and Hydra, which Hubble also discovered in 2005.

Charon was discovered in 1978 at the US Naval Observatory and was first resolved using Hubble in 1990 as a separate body from Pluto.

The finding is a result of ongoing work to support NASA’s New Horizons mission, which is scheduled to fly through the Pluto system in 2015.

The mission is designed to provide new insights about worlds at the edge of our solar system.

Hubble’s photos of Pluto’s surface and the discovery of its satellites have been invaluable for planning for New Horizons’ close encounter, scientists said.

"This is a fantastic discovery," said New Horizons’ principal investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colo.

"Now that we know there’s another moon in the Pluto system, we can plan close-up observations of it during our flyby."

The dwarf planet’s entire moon system is believed to have formed by a collision between Pluto and another planet-sized body early in the history of the solar system.

The galactic smashup flung material that combined into the family of satellites observed around Pluto.

P4 was first seen in a photo taken with Hubble’s Wide Field Camera 3 on June 28.

It was confirmed in subsequent Hubble pictures taken on July 3 and July 18.

The moon was not seen in earlier Hubble images because the exposure times were shorter.

There is a chance that P4 appeared as a very faint smudge in images from 2006, but was overlooked because it appeared obscured, scientists said.

Pluto is the only dwarf planet to once have been considered a major planet.

Once thought of as the ninth planet and the one most distant from the sun, Pluto is now seen as one of the largest known members of the Kuiper belt, a shadowy disk-like zone beyond the orbit of Neptune populated by a trillion or more comets.

Pluto was reclassified as a dwarf planet in 2006, a change widely thought of as a demotion that has attracted controversy and debate.

Birth control pills reduces bone density

By: Your Master On: Wednesday, July 20, 2011
  • Share The Gag
  • Washington: A study has found that birth control pills may reduce a woman’s bone density.

The study by Group Health Research Institute (GHRI) scientists showed that the impacts on bone were small, depended on the woman’’s age and the pill’’s hormone dose, and did not appear until about two years of use.

GHRI Senior Investigator Delia Scholes, PhD, who led the study, said that hormones are a key component of bone health, and hormonal contraceptives are a major source of external hormones for women.

A woman’’s risk of fractures later in life is influenced by the bone mass she gains in her teens through her 20s, and this age group has the highest use of oral contraceptives.

"The teen years are when women most actively gain bone, so we thought it was important to look at that age group," Scholes said.

"We found that oral contraceptive use had a small negative impact on bone gain at these ages, but took time to appear, and depended on hormone dose," she stated.

The researchers measured hip, spine, and whole-body bone densities in 301 teen women aged 14-18, and in 305 young adult women aged 19-30, all Group Health Cooperative members.

After two years, teens who used 30-35 microgram pills showed about 1 percent less gain in bone density at both the spine and whole body sites than teens who did not use hormonal contraceptives.

For young adult women, users and non-users of oral contraceptives showed no differences in bone density at any site.

    birth control pills

At 12-24 months after stopping, teens who took 30-35 microgram pills still showed smaller bone density gains at the spine than teens who did not use oral contraceptives.

At 12-24 months after stopping, young adult women who used either pill dose showed small bone density losses at the spine compared to small gains in women who did not take oral contraceptives.

Scholes says additional studies, including looking at bone changes for a longer time after pill use is discontinued, may tell us more about how oral contraceptive use is related to fracture risk.

For now, the results of Scholes’’ study may help women make informed decisions.

"Bone health, especially for long-term users of the pill, may be one of many factors women consider in choosing a contraceptive method that’’s right for them," she said.

The US Surgeon General recommends that women maintain bone density by eating foods high in calcium and vitamin D, getting weight-bearing exercise, not smoking, and limiting drinking alcohol.

The study has been published online July 13 in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

Police to quiz Amar Singh for cash-for-votes scam

  • New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry is believed to have granted permission to the Delhi Police to question former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in the cash-for-votes scam.

The clearance came on a request made by the Delhi Police to quiz Amar Singh, after his ex-aide Sanjeev Saxena – who is under arrest - said the former SP leader had provided him cash to deliver to three BJP MPs ahead of the 2008 trust vote on Indo-US nuclear deal.

Earlier today, Suhail Hindustani, who is alleged to have acted as a liaison between Amar Singh and BJP MPs in the cash-for-vote scam, sought to drag the Prime Minister and Congress president in the scam.

    Amar Singh

"I received calls from Amar Singh and Ahmed Patel (political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi). Those close to Prime Minister (Manmohan Singh) called me and even from 10 Janpath (Gandhi’s residence)," claimed Hindustani to reporters before being questioned by Delhi Police’s Crime Branch officials probing the case.

Developments in the case came after the Supreme Court rapped the Delhi Police for its "callous" approach in probing the case. The police had filed an FIR in 2008 after a Parliamentary panel recommended it to investigate the case.

BJP MPs had displayed wads of cash in Lok Sabha on July 22, 2008 alleging that their MPs Argal, Faggan Singh Kulaste and Mahavir Bhagora were given money by Saxena allegedly at the behest of Singh and others to vote in favour of the government.
