Cast: Rajinikanth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Danny Denzongpa, Santhanam and Kalabavan Mani.

    Director: Shankar

    Music Composer: A.R. Rahman

    Producer: Kalanithi Maran

    Banner: Sun Pictures

Costume Designer: Manish Malhotra and Mary E. Vogt

    Choreography: Prabhu Deva.

    Lyrics: Vairamuthu

    Art direction: Sabu Cyril

    Cinematography: Ratnavelu

Stunt Co-ordinators: Yuen Woo Ping and Peter Hein

    Special Effects: Stan Wisdom Studios

Script: Late Sujatha, Shankar and Balakumaran.

    STORY:

When it comes to Superstar’s Enthiran (Robot in Hindi), everything related to it has to be big. When it’s a movie this big, even its music release must necessarily make a colourful explosion. Hero superstar Rajinikanth, director Shankar, music composer A.R. Rahman, leading lady Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and producer Kalanithi Maran led the colourful audio launch of Enthiran at Kuala Lumpur on July 31st.

Movies like Jurassic Park, Predator and Avatar made history because of their out-of-the-box themes and realistic portrayal of fictitious characters or extinct animal forms. The animatronix technology used in these movies surpassed all expectations, with Avatar outdoing the other two by a huge margin. One of the studios behind this very elaborate animatronix process is Stan Wisdom Studios. And now, we hear that it’s the very same company that has created the robot-avatar of our superstar in Enthiran!

A robot modelled on Rajinikanth right from his skin tone has been created by the Studios, besides many other such electronic wonders that we will get to see in the movie. Technicians at the studio have supposedly remarked that even in Hollywood they have not worked on a movie that has given scope for them to use every bit of the technology they have, as has Enthiran! Tamil Cinema has indeed come a long way in terms of technology and we sure do hope this movie is worth the wait and the crores! Yuen Woo Ping (of The Matrix, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and The Forbidden Kingdom fame) and Peter Hein are the stunt co-ordinators.

Enthiran (also spelt as Endhiran) brings back the famous duo of Superstar Rajinikanth and director Shankar after their blockbuster Sivaji the boss. Enthiran is also special for its choreography by Prabhu Deva. Lyrics by Vairamuthu, art direction by Sabu Cyril and cinematography by Ratnavelu comprise a regular Shankar team. The director has also roped in Oscar winner Resul Pookutty for sound effects; it is also said that a unique sound effect has been created for the film. The script is by late Sujatha, Shankar and Balakumaran. Other major stars in the film include Danny Denzongpa, Santhanam and Kalabavan Mani. The film is also being dubbed in Telugu and Hindi.

The story of Enthiran as revealed so far: Innovative scientist Dr. Vaseegaran (Rajni), creates a robot Chitti (Rajni again) with artificial intelligence. After some time, the robot behaves more like a human and falls in love with Aishwarya Rai. Now comes the twist. The villains, who are aware of the power of this robot, acquire it to perform evil activities. Knowing the consequences, Vaseegaran sets out on a mission to rescue the robot from evil hands. So will he succeed in his mission? Wait and watch!

Envisaging future fashion fads, costume designer Manish Malhotra and Mary E. Vogt have worked extensively on Rajinikanth’s look in the film. Enthiran will release in 2000 screens worldwide, the highest ever for a Tamil film. The film will be released in over 300 screens outside India, which makes Enthiran the largest worldwide release after Spiderman.

Actually, Shankar’s Enthiran was touted to be a Rs. 100 crore project when it was launched in 2008 by Ayngaran International along with Eros Labs. When Sun Pictures took over (in 2009), the film was said to be a Rs. 150 crore production. Now the buzz is that Enthiran has cost around Rs. 200 crores! The Telugu version of Enthiran, titled Robot, will be sold for not less than Rs. 30 crores.

Mira Nair may be facing a casting crisis for her flick ‘Midnight’s Children’ but the talented director has shift her focus onto a different flick now.

As per reports, Nair has decided to make a film based on a novel by Mohsin Hamid titled ‘The Reluctant Fundamentalist’ and has also shortlisted a main lead for the same. And if sources are to be believed then Shahid Kapoor will be seen playing the protagonist in this one.

Buzz has it that Shahid will play a Pakistani man who lets go of his life of fame in America after a failed love affair and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Since the film is based on a bestseller, the lead role is quite an interesting offer for Shahid.

But Shahid wasn’t Mira’s only choice. The director had was initially caught up between Shahid and Ranbir Kapoor for the role. Confirming the news, a source said, “Between Ranbir and Shahid, Mira felt that Shahid had the intensity that the character required. While immensely appreciative of Ranbir’s talent, Mira thought that Shahid was better suited for this role.”

Going by the novel, the story unfolds in the form of a dialogue between Changez (lead role offered to Shahid) and an American he meets at a cafe in Lahore. The dialogues dwells into Changez’s life post the 9/11 attack in America.

Even though Shahid is yet to commit to the project, a source said, “Mira has already met Shahid. The actor loves the script. The necessary formalities are being worked out as both Mira and Shahid are extremely excited about the film and want to start working on it by early next year.”

It`s probably not the comeback she would have preferred, but troubled actress Lindsay Lohan checked back into a rehab centre after taking drugs in violation of her probation.

Lohan checked into an unidentified rehab centre in southern California, according to celebrity website TMZ.

Lohan`s stint comes ahead of an Oct 22 hearing that could see her jailed for a year for violating terms of a probation that banned her from using drugs and alcohol.

After failing a drug test earlier this month, she spent 15 hours in jail Friday before being freed on $300,000 bail, after an appeals judge overruled a lower judge`s decision that she must spend 30 days in jail.

Lohan was released from a court-ordered rehab stint last month, following a brief jail term imposed for drunk-driving violations.

Lohan announced last week on her Twitter account that she had tested positive in a drug test.

    Sania Mirza On Commonwealth Games

  • Sania Mirza

The game of tennis has "enough depth" to negate the absence of star players when the sport makes its debut at the Commonwealth Games, feels India’s star player Sania Mirza.

It would have been a treat for home fans had world No. 4 Andy Murray, former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, French Open finalist Samantha Stosur and Cyprus’ Marcos Baghdatis, who recently stunned Rafael Nadal, not pulled out of the Games.

The Games are clashing with prestigious season-ending ranking events on the two professional Tours, forcing players to decide against playing in the Games.

Sania, who has been India’s face on the WTA circuit in last half-a-decade, feels star-factor or rankings doesn’t count much when one is on court.

"As a tennis player, one can only compete with the players who are on the other side of the net! However, I can assure you that at least in a global sport like tennis, the depth is tremendous and stardom or rankings have no bearing once a player enters the court," Sania told PTI.

India’s men’s squad is packed with legends such as Leander Paes and rising stars in Somev Devvarman but the women’s squad wears a complete contrast look.

AITA had to recall 33-year-old Nirupama Sanjeev for the Games and apart from Sania and Nirupama, another veteran Rushmi Chakravarthy (513) and youngster Poojashree Venkatesh (444) comprise the four-member women’s team.

    Sania acknowledged the bleak picture.

"It is a great achievement for Niru to be still good enough to get into the team. However, it is disappointing that the cupboard of upcoming talent in Indian women’s tennis looks bare," Sania said.

Sania will not compete in the women’s doubles event as Poojashree and Rushmi will take part in the event. She will play in the singles and pair up with Leander Paes in the mixed doubles. Nirupama will pair up with Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles.

Talking about her own expectations at the Games, world’s third largest sporting event in terms of particpation of countries, Sania said she just believes in giving her best shot and do not think much beyond that.

"I have always expected myself to give my best and to leave the rest to God. This is what I have done for every tournament that I have ever played in my life and till date my expectations from myself remain the same."

One being asked, if she feels pressure to put up a good show before home crowd since it has been an unimpressive season so far for her, she said, "International sport is all about pressure and handling it to the best of one’s abilities. I don’t really feel any extra pressure."

She though was quite optimisitc about winning gold in the mixed doubles event along with Leander Paes.

"We had won a bronze medal at the Busan Asian Games in 2002 and the gold medal in the Doha Asian Games in 2006. I’m hoping we can re-create that magic to win another medal for India in New Delhi."

Sania’s career graph has dipped in the last two years due to injuries and lack of form, though recently she won her ninth WTA doubles title in Guangzhou.

The free fall of singles ranking forced her to go through the qualifiers at the US Open since 2005.

Considering this, a good show at the Games before the home fans, look a must as a medal winning performance, would give it a massive fillip in order to revive her career .

But the Hyderabadi says one single tournament may not shape or mar a career.

"It takes a lot of patience, determination and will power to make a comeback from a serious injury at the highest level. Every win at the professional level adds to one’s confidence. I do not believe that any single tournament can make or break a career," she contended.

  • Australian Get Tips From Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar’s humility has bowled over Australian batsman Philip Hughes, who says it was a fantastic experience to get tips from the Indian icon over a cup of coffee.

"When I was in Mumbai earlier, I had coffee with him and we spoke for about an hour. He asked me so many questions and I also put him many queries. He is a fantastic man and very humble," Hughes said.

"He told me that I should try to play my natural game. We also talked a lot about other things in general. I also asked him a lot of questions about his career," the 21-year-old left-hander from New South Wales said during an interaction.

Set to fill in the shoes of prolific opener Matthew Hayden, Hughes said he is focussed on cementing his place in the side.

"It’s great to be in the squad. Sachin, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman, they are all great batsmen. I may not be part of the main team now, but you never know when that opportunity comes," said Hughes, who made his Test debut against South Africa last year.

For Hughes, batting coach Justin Langer is his idol while he feels skipper Ricky Ponting is a "fantastic guy and a great leader".

The young Aussie is also excited about Indian food and likes Kashmiri and Punjabi food in particular.

"I love Rogan Josh, butter chicken and Naan," he said. Australia play their first Test of the two-match series against India at Mohali on Friday.

Ajith recently met Jayalalitha in the wedding ceremony of Saidai Duraisamy’s family. They had a chat for about a few seconds and Ajith left the place. But then, the media came abuzz with news that Ajith is going to join the ADMK.

Vijay also met Jayalalitha and spoke to her for a few seconds but since Vijay’s plans on politics were known and were open secrets, there were no talks amongst the public on the same. A weekly magazine had reported that Ajith was interested in joining the ADMK, the party, its leader and the principles.

Now, Ajith is rumored to be approached by the Youth Wing of Congress and he was asked to join the party. Ajith refused to join the Congress. This further meant that he may be willing to join the ADMK. However, Ajith refused the news and stated that Saidai Duraisamy was his friend and so he just went for his family’s wedding to bless the couple.

Congress is also trying to rope in Ajith while ADMK is also approaching the actor often to make him join the party. But Ajith is refusing both the offers, reportedly. This leaves the media guessing that Ajith would start his own political party.

The media can speculate with random news and guessing but what Ajith will do will remain with him!

Dabangg Has Created A Buzz In Pakistan

  • dabangg-movie-2010

The footfalls at Pakistani cinema halls went down when Indian movies were banned during the Eid period, but Salman Khan-starrer "Dabangg" has created a buzz and moviegoers are once again thronging the theatres.

Produced by Salman’s younger brother Arbaz Khan, the funny cop drama with a catchy storyline and enchanting music has not only enthralled audiences in India but also witnessed an overwhelming response in Pakistan.

Rizwan, a booking clerk at Cinestar cinema in Lahore, said the movie was released in Pakistan Sep 17, a week after its India release, and "families have started returning to the cinemas for Indian movies. The cinema hall is more than 70 percent full during all ’Dabangg’ shows."

Ever since then president Pervez Musharraf lifted more than four decades of a ban on Indian movies three years ago, the Pakistani cinema halls have got a new lease of life.

The lack of competition and the declining standards of local movies have created a huge vacuum for movie lovers, which is now being filled by Indian movies. The dwindling film industry in Pakistan produces only a handful of low-budget movies every year and fails to garner a satisfactory response at the box office due to poor quality.

Arif Khan, owner of Gulistan cinema, said: "The cinema-going culture has been revived ever since Indian movies started screening in local theatres. Hardly 8-10 movies have been produced in Pakistan during the first nine months of 2010 while 25-30 Indian movies have released during the intervening period," he said.

Khan said a couple of Pakistani movies were released on Eid last year and generated a rush during the holidays. "However, as soon as the holidays ended, the trend again went down," he recalled.

This year too the government did not allow the screening of Indian movies on Eid in a bid to give breathing space to the local industry.

"Had Indian movies run simultaneously with Pakistani flicks on Eid, I am sure the rush would have been diverted to the Indian hits," Khan said.

"Other than ’Dabangg’, ’Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai’, ’I Hate Luv Storys’ and ’Housefull’ have also fared well at the box office in the recent past," he stated.

A booking clerk in DHA cinema said: "The ticket prices ranged between Rs.300 and Rs.500 for Indian movies, relatively high considering almost half the rates for Pakistani movies, but that failed to dent the eagerness of the public."

Several cinema houses have been built in posh localities to cater to the taste of the masses after the revival of Indian movies.

"The revival of cinema in Pakistan has to be credited to Indian movies," Arif said adding that the debate on whether it should have been allowed in the first place had more or less settled down after seeing the response.

There were more than 50 cinemas in Lahore, considered the cultural capital of Pakistan, but the number has gone down to just 14 because the remaining were converted to shopping malls and restaurants due to poor business.

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan will not be performing at the Oct 3 opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games (CWG), organisers said Tuesday.

"Shah Rukh is definitely not performing at the opening ceremony. However, I don’t know if he is planning to attend the event or if he has received any invite from the organising committee. But he is not performing," Viraf Sarkari, director of Wizcraft International Entertainment, told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

The opening ceremony of the Oct 3-14 mega sports event will be a mélange of Indian dances and songs, said Sarkari. Wizcraft is behind the cultural evening at the event.

Oscar winning composer A.R. Rahman will be performing a few songs, apart from the latest version of the CWG anthem. But the Bollywood quotient will take a back seat as India’s cultural heritage will rule the stage on D-day, added Sarkari.

The opening ceremony will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

    5) It’s the costliest film ever: With a budget of Rs. 150 crore, Endhiran boasts of a complete entertainment package. Watch the movie for its maginficence, the stunning visuals, and all the Rajini masala.

    Tamil Films In Oscar Race

Selections for the Oscar race went on recently and ‘Peepli Live’ came out trumps being India’s official entry into the February 2011 Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Peepli Live emerges as the sole winner due to the “film being a reflection of India’s culture and media ethics while highlighting the perennial problem of ‘farmer suicides”. KS Sethumadhavan, who is the selection committee chairman, announced ‘Peepli Live’s entry into the Oscars for nomination on Friday September 24, 2010.

Peepli Live was selected among the 27 films shortlisted. 5 of them were Tamil films. Paa, My Name is Khan, Rajneeti, 3 idiots made it from Bollywood while Pazhassi Raja hailed from the Kerala Film Industry.

The Tamil films were Angaadi Theru, Raavanan and Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya along with Madrasapattinam (to be booed off for plagiarism from the makers of Titanic?). It is funny that someone had sent Singam to the Oscar race.

It could have gotten positive reviews from the media and the screenplay might be racy and entertaining but trying Singam out in the Oscars is utterly humiliating for the Tamil Film Industry.

Angaadi Theru was the toughest bit that fought hard against ‘Peepli Live’ but the satire on the media won the race. Peepli Live’s take on the farmer suicides in the villages of India and the media’s cashing in on the agonies of the farmers won the race for the film. Peepli Live is directed by Anusha Rizvi and Aamir Khan is the proud producer of the film.

Even then, Angaadi Theru is appreciable as an original film but its purely one sided views will not help the film take the Oscar stage. It should have been more a film like ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ than documenting the lives of the sales people in popular shops. We also understand that Slumdog Millionaire is oft debated.

The tall beauty Lakshmi Rai has strongly condemned the usage of the term ‘item girl’ to describe actresses and artistes performing for a single song.

“It isn’t a crime to dance for a song in a film. The term ‘item girl’ could eventually mean ‘item actress’ and could sow unwanted thoughts in the minds of the readers who come across such usage.

It’d be better if an actress is given her due respect for the work she does not only in ‘one song’ but considering her work in her other films as well,” says Lakshmi Rai.

Lakshmi Rai has Ajith’s upcoming film ‘Mangkatha’ and ‘Kanchana’ in her kitty in Tamil and has also been starring in a couple of Malayalam films titled ‘Christian Brothers’ and ‘Casanova’.

Talking to reporters during breaks in shooting, she said that it’s highly condemnable to name an actress as an ‘item girl’ just because she dances for a solitary song in a film.

Kajal rose to stardom with the super success of Magadheera last year.

Although she acted in several films before Magadheera, she didn’t get fame like she did with this blockbuster.

Later she was flooded with offers and many big films came her way. But unfortunately all her films that followed Magadheera turned out to be a damp squib including the Ram starrer Ganesh and Allu Arjun starrer Arya -2. Darling was the only saving grace for her.

If she has to maintain her position at the top, she needs a big hit urgently. Kajal hopes that NTR will bring her luck this year like Ram Charan did last year.

She has pined all her hopes on NTR’s Brindavanam that is releasing on October 8th.

“Whatever I do, and utter during my film`s release is all for the sake of publicity,” said Ram Gopal Varma at the audio launch of his latest film, Rakta Charita.

The audio albums of the movie were unveiled on Sunday (September 26, 2010) at Prasad Lab Preview Theatre in Hyderabad. It was held in a low-key manner. RGV, the film’s producers Madhu Mantena and Rajkumar and Khaleja producer C Kalyan attended the ceremony.

The film’s songs were also screened at the venue. “I sang a song in this film. The song starts with the lyrics of `Kattulato Saavaasam` and the song itself exemplifies the theme of the two parts of Rakta Charitra.

The reason I sang was not to showcase my singing talent. When I was telling the music directors the way this song should be sung, they were fed up of my constant interference and forced me to sing myself,” he said.

C Kalyan is releasing the film in Andhra Pradesh. He presents the Telugu version.

    Movie Review: Vande Maatharam

  • Vande Maatharam

    Movie: Vande Maatharam

    Director: Aravind

    Music: D.Imman

    Cast: Mammootty, Arjun, Sneha, Naseer

There is a dated and jaded look about director Aravind T’s Vande Maatharam. It was four years in the making and it shows. The film follows the pattern of 90’s formula films where an investigative officer brings down a terrorist network single-handedly. Reference point- Vijaykanth films of the 90’s and early 2000 where he plays a cop.

Gopi Krishna (Mammootty) is the southern chief of Intelligence Bureau (IB) who lives a happy life in a posh seaside bungalow with his wife Nandini (Sneha). We assume she works as a pilot as she is shown getting into a call taxi wearing a pilot uniform! One day IB big boss (Mohan Sharma) calls Gopi and tells him a major terrorist with Pakistani connections Malik (Deepak Jethi) has slipped into the country and is planning a major terrorist strike in south India.

Gopi ropes in local cop Anwar Hussain (Arjun) to track down Malik, which takes them to Kochi and later to Thengapattinam near Kanyakumari, where they get the lead. It seems the terrorist want to blow up the Prime Minister (Nasser), who is coming to inaugurate his pet project named ‘Grand Canal Project’, which would link all rivers in the country between Kashmir and Kanyakumari. Our heroes come to the rescue of the nation.

The film lacks focus and rambles all across. The way the investigation unfolds does not have enough twists and turns. Making the terrorist believe that after his jail escape and capture that he is living in future is highly farfetched. And then making the chief of investigations wife (Sneha) pretend that she is his daughter has the audiences hooting. Towards the climax it becomes preachy and unbearable

There are two item numbers and a melody song by D Imman, which is loud and is thrust into the narration. Sneha appears in one song and two scenes. Mammootty sleep walks through the role as he has done similar investigation officer in a dozen Malayalam films. Arjun is there for all the action scenes including absurd jumping from one tree to another tree fight scene with the villain, to avoid stepping on landmines!

On the whole the film is a big letdown and waste of time.

    Verdict: Forget it!

Socialite Kim Kardashian says she is happy being single and doesn’t need a man for the fulfilment.

The reality TV star - who has previously dated soccer players Reggie Bush and Cristiano Ronaldo in the past - believes she could be content on her own but thinks she will one day find love because it makes life "more entertaining".

"I feel like I don’t need a man, but I’m also such a hopeless romantic. I really think that having someone makes everything more entertaining. I don’t think you need a guy to make you happy but it’s nice to have one," said Kardashian.

The 29-year-old beauty - who has just split from Dallas Cowboys football player Miles Austin - is planning to be single for the foreseeable future but if she meets ’Mr. Right’ she will make time for dates, reports contactmusic.com.

"I’m happily single and having fun. But I think everybody can make time for someone they really like. I’m dating or I’m trying to. I just want to keep it a bit quieter and move private than previous relationships," she said.

"I would just take falling in love a bit slower these days. And I’ve got so much more going on, being single means I can concentrate more on myself," she added.

John Travolta To Dance With Akshay Kumar

Bollywood star Akshay Kumar, who has collaborated with many international entertainers such as Kylie Minogue in Blue, Snoop Dogg in Singh Is Kinng and RDB in Kambakkht Ishq, will now dance with Hollywood star John Travolta at a live event.

Travolta’s visit to Mumbai appears to be an uncanny coincidence. It comes at a time when Akshay’s retro John Travolta gets set to rock in Vipul Shah’s Action Replayy.

Vipul Shah has noticed the favourable turn of fortune too. His production team is right now busy negotiating with Travolta’s office to work out an collaboration between Travolta and his desi counterpart, Akshay Kumar.

Yes, the two will be dancing together at a live event. Vipul is in serious talks for this coming together. Akshay Kumar who loves collaborating with international entertainers has also pitched in very strongly for an evening of Saturday Night Fever. Akshay is apparently using his Canadian connection to convince Travolta to get jiggy on stage with him.

When contacted,Vipul Shah tried to underplay the excitement of the Travolta-Akshay event. "There are talks going on. But talking about it would only make things difficult. You see, negotiating with an international star is painstaking. Water-tight contracts have to be drawn up. Unquestionable deals have to be sealed. We’re in the process of doing all that. But like I said, I can’t talk about it until the papers are signed."

While Vipul plays it safe, it is reliably learnt that Travolta’s songs and dance routines from Saturday Night Fever and Grease are being handpicked as part of this historic live performance.

Let’s hope Travolta would have more to do in Akshay’s presence on stage than the other Hollywood icon Sylvester Stallone had to do in Kambhakkt Ishq.

The Canadian director beat Steven Spielberg, Leonardo DiCaprio and Christopher Nolan in the list by the Guardian newspaper’s Film & Music supplement, which proclaimed him the most influential man, reports contactmusic.com.

"Cameron occupies the top two spots in the list of the highest grossing movies of all time, with Titanic (worldwide gross: $1.8 billion) second only to Avatar ($2.7 billion). Those figures are so high that it seems scarcely worth mentioning that other of his films, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, stands in the lower reaches of the top 100 with takings of over $519 million; loose change, really," said a statement from the Guardian.

The list created by experts, including the Guardian’s film editor Andrew Pulvor, studio executive Colin Vaines and former artistic director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival Hannah McGill, also highlighted the importance of Brad Pitt, Quentin Tarantino and George Clooney in its top 10.

Other notable entries in the top 100 include British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen at number 26, Prince of Persia producer Jerry Bruckheimer at number 45 and Kick-Ass screenwriter Jane Goldman at number 96.

As far as Google’s birthday is concerned, today’s logo change solidifies the notion that Google’s birthday is, indeed, September 27. Google had previously been unclear about the exact date, sometimes celebrating on September 7, although the Google.com domain was registered on September 15, 1997.

Chennai Super Kings won the Champions League Twenty20 tournament, defeating Eastern Cape Warriors by eight wickets on Sunday.

Murali Vijay and Mike Hussey cracked sparkling half centuries as Chennai Super Kings were crowned the Champions League Twenty20 winners.

Vijay (58 off 53 balls), who was let off when on 34, cracked his third half century of the tournament while the other opener Hussey played sheet anchor and remained not out on 51 as Chennai chased down the small target of 129 with one over to spare

Earlier, spinners Muttiah Muralitharan (3/16) and Ravichandran Ashwin (2/16) shared five wickets as Chennai restricted Warriors to 128 for seven after the South African champion side elected to bat at the New Wanderers Stadium.

Vijay underlined his emergence as a fine Twenty20 batsman by becoming the highest run getter of the tournament with 294 runs from six matches, eight more than Warriors captain Davy Jacobs.

Vijay’s 53-ball innings was studded with six fours and two sixes while Hussey hit only three fours from 46 balls in his unbeaten knock.

CSK were richer by $2.5 millions for winning the second edition of the tournament, their second crown in five months after their IPL triumph in April. Warriors received $1.3 million for finishing runners-up

The grand finale of the multi-dollar tournament, however, turned out to be a lopsided match with the Warriors bowlers failing to make any impact on the batsmen of the opposition who have beaten them in their last Group A league fixture four days ago.

The total of 128 was too small to defend and Chennai was always in control of the run chase though it got a bit tight with Suresh Raina, who was mainly responsible for CSK’s semifinal win against Royal Challengers Bangalore with an aggressive 94, out cheaply for just two.

Hussey and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (17 not out), however, held on their nerves to pull off the win with a 25-run partnership for the unbroken third wicket.

Dhoni hit the winning runs -- a four off Juan Theron --as Chennai scored 132 for two in 19 overs to lift the title.

Vijay and Hussey did not need to take too much risk as they ran mostly in singles in their 103-run opening wicket stand in front of a capacity crowd.

Vijay lived dangerously on a couple of occasions with an edge from his bat flying past wicketkepeer Mark Boucher and Justin Kreusch for a four. He was also lucky to survive in the ninth over with wicketkeeper Mark Boucher missing a simple stumping chance off the bowling of Nicky Boje when on 34.

But he made amends of these lapses later as he struck some fine shots, including two sixes off Nicky Boje.

Vijay fell to Boje in the 15th over after taking his side to the threshold of victory. Earlier, Muralitharan snapped three wickets as Chennai Super Kings restricted Warriors to 128 for seven.

Muralitharan, who took three for 16, got able support from his spin colleague Ashwin (2/16) as CSK restricted the Warriors to a meager total.

Pacers Dough Bollinger and Albie Morkel bagged a wicket each while Laxmipathy Balaji was unsuccessful.

Advance booking for the Rajinikanth-Aishwarya Rai starrer Endhiran begins at 9 am on Saturday across the state, six days ahead of its release on October 1.

The large-scale production by Sun Pictures - at a cost of Rs120 crore, Endhiran is Tamil cinema’s costliest film - will release in 500 of around 1,300 theatres in the state.

"Distributors are looking at 500-550 theatres to release the film," Hansraj Saxena, CEO, Sun Pictures, told Express. With that, the film will have the widest release in the state, double that of Rajini’s previous film, Sivaji The Boss, screened in 252 theatres.

Kamal Haasan’s Dasavathaaram and Vijay’s Suraa was shown in 275 theatres. World over, 2,000 screens will show Endhiran, Saxena said, though some theatres are yet to give a confirmation.

In the city, the film will be released in more than 40 theatres, including multiple screens of most multiplexes.

In Sathyam Cinemas (including Escape), there will be 24 shows of the film a day, while Mayajaal will screen the film 60 times daily, the highest ever for a single film at the multiplex.

Although individual collections of theatres may be affected due to Endhiran’s record distribution, owners are happy.

A Minimum Guarantee System, which requires theatre owners to pay to screen films, has mostly been done away with for Endhiran.

"In 90 per cent of theatres, the film is being screened on a rental or percentage basis - the collection will be shared by distributor and exhibitor, which augurs well for us," said Sridhar, TN Theatre Owners Association member.

Star cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has become the latest to heap praise on Indian woman boxer MC Mary Kom for her unprecedented feat of five world titles, describing her achievements as "remarkable".

The 27-year-old mother-of-two from Manipur is the only woman boxer to clinch a medal at each of the six World Championships, starting with a silver in the inaugural edition in 2001.

And Tendulkar, an iconic figure in international cricket, lauded the diminutive boxer after coming back from South Africa from the Champions League Twenty20.

"Got to know about Mary Kom’s stupendous achievement when I got back frm SA. Simply amazing! All the more remarkable aft taking break n havin 2kids," the veteran batsman wrote on his Twitter page.

An overwhelmed Mary Kom, who clinched the light fly weight 48kg gold in the latest World Championships, said she felt honoured after being complimented by one of her favourite athletes.

"I am honoured to get appreciation from him. I don’t watch much cricket but I like Sachin Tendulkar. He is somebody who every Indian sportsperson should learn from," Mary Kom said.

"I have never met him but from whatever I have seen of him on TV, he comes across as very humble," she added.

Dubbed ’Magnificent Mary’ by the International Boxing Association, Mary Kom has also been picked for the Asian Games in November after giving trials within 24 hours of landing in Delhi from Barbados, where the latest World Championship was held.

Memorabilia belonging to 25 top sportspersons from India and overseas, including tennis star Roger Federer, batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar and chess ace Viswanathan Anand, will go under the auctioneer’s hammer on October 29.

Six of the precious memorabilia, including the gold medal won by Anand after beating Vladimir Kramnik in a World Championship match in Bonn in 2008, the bat used by Tendulkar when he scored an unbeaten 163 against New Zealand in a one-day international in Christchurch last year, Federer signed tennis shoes (donated by Globosports), were unveiled at a function on Thursday.

Tennis racquets used by Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi to win the mixed doubles Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon (2010) and Australia (2009) respectively are also a part of ’Equation 2010 - An Auction for Equality’, conducted by actor Rahul Bose’s NGO ’The Foundation’.

The proceeds of the auction will go towards the corpus of the Foundation, which is dedicated to creating a world without discrimination, it was announced on Thursday.

"’Equation’ started off as a dream and only began to become a reality when Sachin Tendulkar and Viswanathan Anand donated some of the most prized memorabilia in world sport today. ’The Foundation’ needs a corpus to ramp up the work it is doing, to the next level.

"’Equation’ provides that opportunity in an unforgettable way during an evening enshrining the finest moments of Indian sport and the highest values its champions display brings back a little bit of quality and sanity into our lives," Bose told reporters.

When asked how much money was the NGO expecting to raise from the auction, Bose said, "I don’t know how much money is going to be raised. We’ve never done this before. To be frank, I don’t really care if we raise Rs 10 lakh or Rs one crore. The idea is to celebrate the sportspersons."

Bose said online bids won’t be accepted during the auction as the organisers didn’t have the required permission from the Government.

"We can’t have online bids because as a registered charity we have permission to get bids only from Indians. This is a long process but as and when it happens it would be a big thing. We plan to make the auction an annual event," he said.

Eleven sportspersons have confirmed their presence for the auction and Bose added that the event was likely to have representation from Bollywood as well.

The other donors are: Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Virender Sehwag, Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi (all Cricket); Vijay Amritraj, Sania Mirza (both Tennis), Prakash Padukone and Saina Nehwal (both Badminton), Pankaj Advani and Geet Sethi (Billiards), Baichung Bhutia (Football), Viren Rasquinha and Ajit Pal Singh (both Hockey).

    New Zealand Will Compete CWG

  • New Zealand athletes

New Zealand athletes will compete at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games but officials will review progress around athletes’ accommodation and security on a daily basis.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee announced after a near seven-hour meeting on Friday that it would continue planning for its athletes to begin arriving in the Indian capital from Sept. 28.

President Mike Stanley said progress made by games organizers in the past 24 hours had been significant, but his organization would continue review hygiene, security and other standards around games facilities.

"We remain hopeful that things can be turned around," Stanley told a news conference late Friday. "What we found was inexcusable and unacceptable but we’ve seen a change in leadership and this is positive."

New Zealand had been among the sternest critics of living standards at the athletes’ village after its team manager Dave Currie earlier this week said he found conditions in the New Zealanders’ accommodation "unlivable."

Currie was the first team manager to describe conditions which included excrement in rooms, indications that dogs had been living in some apartments and problems with wiring, plumbing and furnishings.

Other teams later joined New Zealand in describing the village as "uninhabitable", saying rooms leaked, construction materials littered the village site and water from recent rains had pooled in many areas.

New Delhi is also battling an outbreak of dengue fever, spread by mosquitoes which breed in stagnant water.

New Zealand joined Scotland and Canada on Thursday in delaying the departure of its athletes for New Delhi as organizers, spurred by Indian government intervention, raced to address team concerns.

Stanley and NZOC secretary general Barry Maister returned from New Delhi early Friday after a 27-hour visit to assess the village and other facilities at first hand. They reported to the NZOC board Friday before it reached its decision.

Currie was also involved in the meeting by conference call from New Delhi. He indicated earlier Friday that his optimism that outstanding problems could be resolved had increased with the involvement of senior government ministers.

It is proved once again that a man of words is not always a man of deeds. Rajni has a global demand in Japan, Malaysia, America and other countries. However, news about his salary in Endhiran is not heartening. Usually, Rajni gets 25 crores to 40 crores depending on various factors for a movie.

For Endhiran, Rajni has decided to get a percentage share. Sun pictures initially promised to pay 20% of the amount of money for which Endhiran is sold worldwide. Rajni too accepted the offer. During audio release function in Malaysia, Kalanithi Maran boasted that “Rajni has so much confidence in the movie and he has not got his salary till now”.

Now, Endhiran prints have been sold for 250 crores. However, Rajni is not yet paid. The Rs.1001 advance was the only amount that was paid to Rajni. When the issue about Rajni’s salary came up to Kalanithi Maran, he simply said that the amount can be fixed after finding out the movie’s collection once it is released.

Actor Suriya, who is playing the role of a Circus artiste in ‘Ezhaam Arivu’ (EA) directed by A.R. Murugadoss, is training hard to play the role perfectly. He has been training in juggling balls and tightrope walk, etc.

Usually a hero who is said to be doing all the ‘hard work’ ends up doing nothing other than what he does in front of the camera but Suriya is an exception.

The unit wants to show everyone that he is serious about what he does. It is said that the unit of EA is planning for a live demo of Suriya’s circus.

Sources say that the star would do the literal ‘tightrope’ walk either on the eve of the audio-launch of the film or during the press-meet to be held in connection with the release of the film.

    Great going Suriya!

We already know that Power Star Pawan Kalyan and actress Trisha are pairing up in Jayanth C. Paranji’s ongoing project Khushiga (also spelt Kushiga), a remake of the Bollywood flick Love Aaj Kal, starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone.

The interesting news is that in the original, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika had a liplock scene, which is a major highlight of the film. But in Telugu version, when director Jayanth C. Paranji asked Pawan Kalyan and Trisha to repeat the scene, Pawan Kalyan declined, though Trisha was ready.

Considering his age and status, the actor also advised the director to avoid all such scenes. Pawan Kalyan is said to have informed the director that he is not interested in spoiling his brother megastar Chiranjeevi’s image by performing such scenes.

Produced by Ganesh Babu under the banner of Parameswara Arts, Khushiga is progressing at a brisk pace in Ramoji Film City. The first schedule will run for a brief period after which the unit will leave for Varanasi (Kasi), where a special set has been erected. Music is by Mani Sharma and the film is presented by Bade Ravi.

Just weeks after he made an impromptu decision to record two more songs for his upcoming Bollywood flick ‘Jhootha Hi Sahi’, A R Rahman is now making one more effort to make the film a musical treat for fans.

The music composer, who added pride to India by brining home the Oscars and Grammy, has recorded some of the background score for the movie at an iconic studio in Hollywood.

“Recorded with an LA jazz quartet, a couple of whom have played with the likes of Barbara Streisand and Billie Holiday,” wrote the Mozart of Madras on a social networking website.

Rahman added: “It’s been a great experience working with Abbas Tyrewala again.” Back home in Tamil cinema, ‘Endhiran’, the Superstar Rajinikanth starrer which has music by Rahman, has one more week to hit the screens.
