  • Lionel MessiLooks like the people of Kolkata are in for some major star gazing! The football crazy city will soon host a friendly match between Argentina and Venezuela and popular footballer Lionel Messi is all set to play the match. Actor Ranbir Kapoor, who is a major fan of Messi, will be there to be a part of the historic match.

Ranbir along with filmmaker Anurag Basu will watch the footballer in action from the stands with the crowd.

Ranbir is said to be super excited about watching his favourite footballer live in action. He has apparently taken a day off from the hectic schedule of ‘Rockstar’ promotions and flying down to Kolkata to watch the match on September 2.

Speaking to a daily, Anurag Basu confirmed that the duo would be watching the match from the stalls. "Public ke saath match dekhne ka mazaa hi kuch aur hai," said Basu. In fact, Basu and Ranbir just got back from a week-long shoot in Kolkata for the former`s ‘Barfee’.

"We shot in crowded locations of the city like Phool Bazar and Howrah Bridge. The crowds, known to get over-excited when they see Mumbai stars, were exceptionally well behaved. This was Ranbir`s first visit to Kolkata in recent years, and he made himself comfortable in the city," said the director.

Ranbir requested ‘Rockstar’ director Imtiaz Ali to give him some time off to watch the match. A friend of the actor said, "Even if Imtiaz tied him down to a lamp post on September 2, he`d have been in Kolkata for the match. Ranbir is a huge Messi fan. Not seeing the match is not an option."

The actor and the filmmaker have already made plans for the big day and also intend to meet Messi post the match.

About 80,000 people are expected to watch the match at the Salt Lake Stadium on the given day. And with Ranbir on the stands and Messi on the field, the fans will surely have a tough time concentrating on and off the field!

Dev Anand commenting on Anna Hazare`s fast

  • Dev AnandOctogenatian actor Dev Anand has refrained from commenting on activist Anna Hazare`s fast for a strong anti-graft law, saying he doesn`t want to create a controversy.

"Lets not talk about politics because this is a subject which I can go on talking about. It may create controversy, which is not right at this moment," Dev Anand told reporters at the launch of the first look of his news directorial venture `Chargesheet` here late Wednesday evening.

Anna Hazare`s fast entered its 10th day Thursday.

"In any democracy, any one can do anything - the ruling party can do anything, that`s for sure. To pass any opinion irresponsibly without thinking is not right and I will not do it," he said.

In his heyday, the 87-year-old Dev Anand charmed audiences with films like `Hum Dono` (1962), `Guide` (1965), `Jewel Thief`(1967), `Hare Rama Hare Krishna` (1971) and `Gambler` (1971) and he still exudes the same spirit for cinema.

Produced by his home production Navketan Production, `Chargesheet` is an action thriller in which he features as a CBI officer.

Though his last few films like `Censor` (2001), `Love At Times Square` (2003) and `Mr. Prime Minister` sank at the box office, Dev Anand continues experimenting with fresh ideas to grow as a filmmaker.

"Unless you are experimenting, how can you progress? You have to experiment," said Dev Anand.

Releasing Sep 30, `Chargesheet` also features Naseeruddin Shah and Jackie Shroff along with former Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.

Gautam Gambhir likely to be fit for ODI series

  • Gautam GambhirThe uncertainty over Gautam Gambhir`s participation in the upcoming ODI series against England is all but over with the Indian opener likely to be fit for the five-match rubber, team manager Shivlal Yadav said on Wednesday.

Yadav said Gambhir should be fine for next month`s ODI series after his MRI scan did not show anything untoward.

He, however, said that the left-hander might not play in the practice game against Sussex here on Thursday.

Gambhir is critical to India`s plans in the ODIs now that his fellow opener Virender Sehwag has been completely ruled out for the five one-dayers and one-off Twenty20 match.

Gambhir suffered the concussion after he backpedalled at mid-on in a bid to catch a miscued pull off Kevin Pietersen during the Oval Test. The chance was fluffed when he fell back and hit his head on the ground with a thud.

Even though speculation over his availability has died down after the MRI scan, the left-hander did not come out to practice with his colleagues on Wednesday.

The present series has been one of misfortune for Gambhir. He was painfully hit on his right elbow while fielding at forward short leg during the first Test at Lord`s last month.

He subsequently had to miss the second Test at Trent Bridge. He did play the third Test at Edgbaston and scored 38 and 14 in the two innings.

Arjuna Ranatunga has blamed the BCCI

  • Arjuna RanatungaFormer Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga has blamed the BCCI and the IPL for India`s debacle in England, saying the Board did not let the players prepare well for the tough English conditions.

India surrendered its numero uno status to England after suffering a humiliating 4-0 whitewash.

"They seem to have got carried away with their IPL. It seems like they don`t need outside influences to harm Indian cricket, the BCCI is doing it," Ranatunga said. Ranatunga attributes lack of preparation as the main reason which caused the Indian down fall in England.”

"After winning the World Cup all of India`s leading cricketers went straight to play in IPL and then some of them opted to miss out the West Indies tour.”

"Some of them even delayed surgery after the World Cup not wanting to miss the cash rich IPL, and after arriving in England half-fit broke down half-way through the England tour," Ranatunga told a daily.

Ranatunga is a known IPL critic as in 2008 as the head of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) he wanted his players to undertake a tour of England to fill the void of Zimbabwe.

But the players opted to play in IPL backed by powerful local politicians. His opposition to IPL had primarily cost his place as the head of SLC.

Ricky Ponting persuaded Dravid against retiring

By: Your Master On: Thursday, August 25, 2011
  • Share The Gag
  • Ricky PontingFormer Australia skipper Ricky Ponting claims that he persuaded Rahul Dravid against retiring when he was written off after a string of low scores last year and the in-form Indian batsman has reciprocated the support by inspiring him during his lean patch.

Dravid, the lone Indian batsman to perform well in with three centuries and 461 runs in the team`s recent 0-4 Test whitewash at the hands of England, was woefully out of form last year and Ponting said he encouraged the veteran right-hander carry on despite the criticism.

"I remember after our last series in India there was a lot of talk and speculation about Dravid being finished," Ponting said.

"I actually went and found him at the end of the series and said `don`t you even think about retiring` because I just saw some stuff in a few of his innings that suggested he was still a very, very good player.”

"I just said `don`t let them wear you down, don`t let them get you down`. I received a similar text message before and after the Ashes from him as well," he added.

The 36-year-old Ponting has not scored a Test century since January last year but he is confident of regaining his touch and he is looking upto Dravid for inspiration.

"There are a few (who provide an inspiration for batsmen of advancing years). Sachin (Tendulkar) and (Jacques) Kallis both had a great last year; Dravid is doing well now.”

"It`s not only good for guys of my age to see guys doing that, it`s good for the younger blokes to see it as well; to know that if you keep doing the right things and working hard, and if you`ve got talent, then age is not a barrier in our game," he said.

Speaking about the state of the game in general, Ponting said he is worried about the impact of Twenty20 on youngsters.

"The big worry I`ve had about Twenty20 cricket and even other shorter forms of the game being played at really developmental times in kids` careers is that it won`t teach them the art of concentration.

"Cricket for me when I was growing up meant batting until someone got me out, and if that took them a week then that`s how long it took them," he said.

"Now, even Under-17s and Under-19s are playing T20 games in national championships, and at the detriment of two-day games. Good state players these days are averaging 35; if you were averaging 35 when I was playing your dad would go and buy you a basketball or a footy and tell you to play that. So there are areas of concern there; I don`t know how you change them," he explained.

Asked about India`s slide from the top of ICC rankings after the debacle in England, Ponting said it would be interesting to see how Mahendra Singh Dhoni`s men do once the veterans retire.

"India still haven`t reached that point that I thought they`d get to yet. They`ve still got that crux, those great batters in that side. Time will tell with India now. Dravid was probably one who was in the gun before the rest of them and he`s found a way to come through," he said.

"They (Tendulkar, Dravid and VVS Laxman) are all about the same age and they won`t go on forever. They will be tested more than anything with their bowlers.”

"I think we found even in the last few years that a lot of their spin bowling probably isn`t as strong as it used to be, and if you take Zaheer (Khan) out of their fast bowling stocks there`s not much left there either; so they`ve got an interesting couple of years ahead," he added.

On whether India was focusing too much on Twenty20 and ignoring Tests, Ponting said, "They`re probably prioritising Twenty20 cricket as much as anyone aren`t they, with the IPL being based there and the commitment some players have to certain franchises and tournaments going on around that."

"I reckon a good example of where their cricket is now is the fact they played RP Singh in that last Test match, when he hadn`t played a first-class game since January," he explained.

Bollywood celebrities support for Anna Hazare

By: Your Master On: Thursday, August 18, 2011
  • Share The Gag
  • Anna HazareLyricist Javed Akhtar says it is "undemocratic", while for actor Anupam Kher, it’s the "saddest day in Indian democracy" -- several Bollywood celebrities are disappointed with the government’s decision to detain civil society activist Anna Hazare Tuesday before he could begin a protest fast in support of a strong Lokpal Bill.

Hazare, 74, was arrested early Tuesday from where he was staying here, and the police later also arrested his associates Arvind Kejriwal and Kiran Bedi, who were going to start their protest at Rajghat for a strong anti-corruption bill.

Members of the Hindi film fraternity took to micro-blogging site Twitter to share their sentiments on the issue. Actor Purab Kohli said he would be part of the movement against corruption by joining several others at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan Tuesday to protest "Gandhian style", and composer Vishal Dadlani would join him too.

Here’s what others have to say:

Anupam Kher: Anna Hazare, Kiran Bedi and Arvind Kejriwal arrested even before they could reach JP park (in Delhi). Saddest day for Indian democracy. The MOST important thing for all of us to remember is to keep this protest absolutely PEACEFUL. That is what ANNA wishes.

Javed Akhtar: I have had certain reservations about Anna’s method but his arrest can not be condoned. It is undemocratic, unacceptable.

Shekhar Kapur: Anna Hazare has been detained by Delhi Police. I am reminded of the days of the Raj. Indian ’sarkar’ turns it back on democracy. There was no threat of violence. There was none last time. People thronging to Delhi to support agitation against corruption. The state is reacting out of fear of a mass upsurge against a political system people no longer trust. Millions support Anna because they lost faith in system. If government represents people, they must allow them to demonstrate peacefully.

Anurag Kashyap: Congress is really behaving like how they did during the emergency, they play it like they really have a lot to hide... Congress, by use of force is just reaffirming the negative view people have of their governance and gives more credibility to the accusations.

Shabana Azmi: We condemn the arrest of Anna Hazare and his team and the ban on the proposed fast. Right to protest peacefully is a democratic right.

Purab Kohli: I’m going to go to peacefully protest the arrest of Anna Sahib Hazare. Someone who is fighting peacefully day and night for ME. I’m going to be at Azad Maidan in Mumbai post-lunch. Join me and let’s spread some love. Gandhian style! I feel a fear of being arrested but I’m not going to be an arrested state of being anymore. I’ll be at the Azad Maidan at 3 p.m.

Pooja Bedi: Right to protest peacefully is a democratic right! How dare a democratic govt deny to its citizens their constitutional right! I hope the govt’s authoritarian attitude does not turn a peaceful protest into a violent agitation! If so, only the govt will be to blame.

Madhur Bhandarkar: We totally condemn d arrest of Anna Hazare... Voices of ppl lke Anna can’t be muffled by detaining them... He stands today as d voice of 120 cr Indians.

Vishal Dadlani: They’ve arrested Anna Hazare. Bad move, government. BIG mistake! You’ve made yourselves look dictatorial, and Anna, even more of a martyr! Presenting Anna’s draft to parliament is the right course forward, and his arrest is very wrong. Joining the protest at Azad Maidan today.

Farhan Akhtar: The Indian citizen has the right to protest peacefully. Anna’s arrest is unconstitutional and shows symptoms of an authoritarian mindset.

Bipasha Basu: Anna Hazare needs to be supported to kill the ’Demon’ called ’Corruption’ that is eating up our country!

    R. Madhavan: This move and method of preventing Anna Hazare is in my opinion most foolish and silly high handed act by the authorities. Big Mistake. Why is the Supreme court quiet on this blatant breach of Anna Hazare’s right to peaceful protest.

Sophie Choudry: Ironic that the day after Independence Day, govt decides that peaceful protests/fasts r unlawful? Isn’t that how the Independence movement began yrs ago?! Am in London so cant b part of the protests 4 Anna’s arrest today. Request u all 2 only be part of peaceful protests! Be heard but stay safe.

Dia Mirza: It’s clear the government today has made Anna Hazare a bigger hero than he already was.

Gaurav Kapur: Bound to happen. Doesn’t Anna know that the only way to protest safely in our country is to break shops & burn buses!

Katrina Kaif was the original choice for the role but she was uncomfortable donning a bikini and doing a kissing sequence with Aamir.
