Herschelle Gibbs Autobiography Exposed

Stories about sexual orgies, marijuana sessions and the dominance of a group of senior players in South Africa cricket squad have been exposed in out of favour opener Herschelle Gibbs’ autobiography, which is releasing on Monday.

The weekly ’Sunday Times’ carried excerpts from Gibbs’ book, a day before its release.

The book graphically details the sexual exploits of the controversial player who has been in trouble for his late night binges and drunken driving charges, as well as leading players in smoking pot in the West Indies.

Gibbs, who just last week confessed that he would have to work very hard to return to the national squad, could also incur the ire of fellow players after writing in his book that the Proteas are dominated by a clique of older players.

"The team has been criticised for being run by a group of senior players - Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Mark Boucher, and more recently, AB de Villiers," Gibbs wrote.

"This inner circle splits the team in two and makes any chance of developing true team spirit among the Proteas impossible," said Gibbs, adding that former national coach Mickey Arthur had often bowed to them after trying to take them on.

"Simply put, without Graeme’s backing, he didn’t have much influence over the guys. In the end, Graeme was simply too powerful."

Gibbs also disclosed how the squad never regained its spirit after former captain Hansie Cronje, now deceased, got a life ban following his admission to match-fixing that was first uncovered by Indian authorities.

"Things were never the same. I sympathised with Shaun Pollock (who took over from Cronje). He had a tough time filling Hansie’s shoes and gluing the team together. But the Proteas never had that same togetherness under Polly (Pollock). He never socialised with boys too much."

Gibbs was one of the co-accused with Cronje and Henry Williams, after allegations of match-fixing in Nagpur. He was suspended for six months after that, but still respects the late South African skipper.

"(Despite) the cloud that hangs over his legacy, I can tell you that I’ve never played with anyone who possessed such a die-hard attitude to winning," Gibbs stated.

The poor performance of the national team in recent years also came under fire from Gibbs, who was himself blamed for contributing to that.

"We’ve got to admit that the Proteas have underachieved in international cricket over the past decade."

Gibbs summed up his own indiscretions, which included a confession to pulling out some of his wife Tenielle Povey’s hair while he was driving during a fight.

"As explosive as my batting can be, it hasn’t quite matched the pyrotechnics of my life off the field," Gibbs wrote.

    Bava Telugu Movie Review

  • bava

    Movie: Bava

    Director: Rambabu

Cast: Siddarth, Praneetha, Ahuti Prasad, Rajendra Prasad, Samrat, Brahmanandam, Ali, Tannikella Bharani, Raghubabu

With a Telugu title, beautiful rural locations, and a hero who has proved his mettle with the family crowds, Bava - starring Siddarth and big-eyed Praneetha - has come with a big bang.

A successful farmer Seetharam (Rajendra Prasad) has an ambition: to ensure that his son Veerababu (Siddarth) is married into a family that will take care of him.

Veerababu, however, is unaware of his father’s dream and remains a wastrel along with his buddies.

One day he falls in love with Varalakshmi (Praneetha), a girl from his neighbouring village. He tries many tricks to impress her, and at last succeeds in winning the girl’s confidence and love.

When the girl’s parents try to get her engaged elsewhere, Varalakshmi comes crying to Veerababu.

The hero ties the nuptial knot, but his father does not approve. He tells him how the two families - Veerababu’s and Varalakshmi’s - had separated 25 years ago, and that she is his cousin (Maradalu). Veerababu, however, now decides to marry Varalakshmi officially.

His exploits form the crux of Bava. Siddarth imitates Kamal Haasan’s mannerisms in several scenes. As for the heroine, she is extremely glamorous and she has tried her level best to present herself with ease.

Rajendra Prasad is adequate as the father. All others have done their best.

Bava unfolds with an opening shot that resembles Akshay Kumar’s Singh is Kinng. The story mimics the comedy from Chandini Chowk to China, and when it comes to flashback, it mimics Love Aaj Kal.

The sentimental stuff is lifted from several popular Telugu films.

The first half is average, while the second half is boring with a weak story line and screenplay. The director seems to have lifted the scenes - like the sharing of the village deities from Seetha Ramula Kalyanam and the cycle race between the villain and the hero from Lakshmi Kalyanam and Avakaya Biryani.

The songs and music are average. The title song is the saving grace of the film. It’s a sizzling number shot on the banks of the Godavari river.

Cinematography is a major plus point. Dialogues are convincing in some scenes. Editing is not up to the mark.

Comedy is weak, despite having ace figures like Brahmanandam, Ali and Raghubabu.

    Verdict: Below average

Model Monikangana Dutta, who would debut in Bollywood with Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Guzaarish, seems to be in no mood to hang up her boots on the ramp for the tinsel town.

"I have not given up modelling. I have been selected as one of the six Victoria’s Secret Angels, the world famous brand synonymous with chic women wear," she said.

Monikangana, who earlier appeared in fashion magazines like Elle and Vogue, is the first Indian model to be one of the six Victoria’s Secret Angels - the main models. The others include the likes of Brazilian model Alessandra Ambrosio and Australian Miranda Kerr.

Coming back to Guzaarish, the model-turned-actress refused to divulge details about her character Estella Francis in the movie toplining Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

However, she said she has a dance with Hrithik in the movie for which the director had put her in a dancing school.

"The character is very much like what I have gone through in my personal life. When Sanjay sir narrated the character to me, I said I have to do this role," she said.

After sizzling on Bollywood screen for almost a decade, dusky beauty Bipasha Basu has signed her first international project -- English-French director Roland Joffe’s Singularity.

The 31-year-old is extremely excited and admits she does have butterflies in her stomach.

’I am very excited...but have to admit that I am also a little nervous. Everything happened really fast,’ said Bipasha.

Bipasha met Joffe in a chance encounter at the Taj Land’s End Hotel in Mumbai in September.

The $33 million movie, written by Ajey Jhankar, is a riveting tale of an impossible love set across two time periods and continents.

It is set in the backdrop of the First Anglo-Maratha War of the 18th century and revolves around four characters - a British officer in colonial India and the Indian woman he falls in love with, an American marine biologist and his researcher lover -- who gets trapped in a wrecked British merchant ship.

The film will be shot in Australia and India. Bipasha will be flying to Brisbane in the first week of November.

Bipasha, who will be missing Diwali for the initial rehearsals for the film, says she would have loved to get some more time to prepare for her role.

’I am not getting much of preparation time right now. I have been given just eight days to prepare for underwater scenes and horse riding...I wish I had at least a month’s time for preparation,’ she said.

As much as she would have liked to, Bipasha is also not getting much time to brush up on her history.

’There is just no time before I fly out! I have finished all my pending endorsement assignments and now I will try and grasp whatever I can there itself,’ she said.

Nevertheless, she is looking forward to working with Hollywood actors.

’The script is fantastic. They have a lot of expertise in their field...it’s going to be a whole lot of hard work, and it’s going to be great fun to adapt to their system of working,’ she said.

Singularity also stars Bollywood actor Abhay Deol besides Hollywood stars Chris Pine, Josh Hartnett, Olga Kurylenko, Christopher Egan and Shane Briant, among others.

Bipasha will shoot from the third week of November till the last week of December in Brisbane.

Her upcoming Indian projects include Dum Maamro Dum and Abbas-Mustan’s Players.

Bipasha is glad that Abbas-Mustan, who gave her a launchpad with 2001 film Ajnabee, were accommodating enough to adjust their dates so that she could give her nod to Singularity.

The film is tentatively slated for a 2011 release.

Anniyan went average in Hindi and Robot was the turning point. Now, ‘Boys’ which was neither remade nor dubbed will be dubbed in Hindi and released in the north. The film has Siddharth and Genelia who enjoy some popularity in Bollywood which is expected to bring in some business.

Now, as Shankar is well recognized throughout India, ‘Boys’ may see some fanfare due to its offbeat story and pungent script. The peppy songs of AR Rahman will be another attraction. Sri Surya Movies had burnt their fingers by spending lavishly on the film and finally incurring loss.

Abbas Tyrewala will write the Hindi dialogues and lyrics. Sri Surya Movies hopes that this dubbed version will win some of their lost money back. ‘Boys’ is, perhaps, one of the best films of Shankar.

Not sure how she is doing that ‘Ye Maya Chesave’ but then she has been bagging some of the most prestigious film projects one after the other. She is Samantha and even before her debut film ‘Ye Maya Chesave’ released, she got a chance to act in the film ‘Brindaavanam’. Before that released, she was selected as the pair for Mahesh Babu in the film ‘Dhookudu’.

Now, even before the shooting of that film has started, she has bagged the golden chance of pairing up with Pawan Kalyan. Samantha who was praising Naga Chaitanya while working for the film ‘Ye Maya Chesave’ began to push NTR junior into the sky while working with him in ‘Brindaavanam’. Now, she has started doing the ‘Bhajana’ of Mahesh Babu. With this, many are feeling that this beauty has been bagging good offers by singing praises about her heroes. But now, it is heard that there is another big story behind this.

It is heard that before Samantha sings praises of the hero, she uses her seductive charms and lures the director who is going to make the film and gets him under her spell. If a director recommends that for a particular character, only that heroine is the perfect choice then any big hero will not recommend other heroines.

That is why, it is heard that the secret of Samantha’s success is that she is ‘managing’ to get the directors to say those lines and has been quite good at that. During the shooting of ‘Brindaavanam’, Samantha was in regular touch with Srinu Vytla and used her seductive charms. As soon as the project got okayed and she got the advance, Samantha began to divert her focus towards V V Vinayak. It is heard that even there, she was able to tempt the director to her charms and that is why the news has arrived that she has been roped in as the leading lady for Pawan Kalyan.

The experts are saying that Samantha who has mastered the art of how to deal with ‘affairs’ in the required manner will have no stopping in the time to come.

FOR Bollywood actor Anoushka Sharma, a trip from Mumbai to Delhi turned out to be quite a nightmare.

Anoushka, who shot to fame after working with Shah Rukh Khan in Rab ne bana di Jodi , was travelling on a Kingfisher Airlines flight to Delhi for the promotion of her upcoming film Band Baja Baraat . She was accompanied by co- star Ranbir Singh.

Sources said that midway through the flight, the actors had an argument with two passengers.

Sharma and Singh claimed one of the passengers sitting in a nearby seat had been photographing them on his cell phone. But their claim was refuted by the other passenger.

The argument became heated as the actors insisted that the mobile phone be shown to them. But it was promptly turned down by the two passengers. The dispute continued even after the flight landed at the Delhi airport and both parties went to the police station at the domestic airport.

They stayed there for an hour following which the two actors emerged and claimed that a compromise had been reached.

Police officers too confirmed that a compromise had been reached and that no one has filed a complaint.

One of the two persons with whom the actors had the dispute was a former IAS officer, police sources said.

Sentiments and lady luck go hand in hand for anyone and the film industry is no exception. This time, it was the turn of megastar Chiranjeevi who had to rely on the words of the planetary positions and their readers. Yes, it seems that astrologers close to Chiru gave him a valuable advice.

It seems they said that when Chiru kept his daughter Srija away he had failures and went through a real tough time but when he had her near to him, success came in multiple folds. So now, the astrologers advised Chiru that he should get Srija within in his vicinity if he needs some good luck and good times.

They also advised that although her surname changed, her very presence within the close contours of Chiranjeevi will show immense positive effect on him.

And their advice seems to be working as it is being observed that as soon as Srija has been taken back, Chiru’s decision to get back to films is being welcomed by many, even his party is not being subjected to any humiliations or embarrassing moments. The coming days will show how far the Srija magic will take the megastar.

Sania Mirza To Give Her Best In Asian Games

She may not have succeeded in winning a gold at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games, but tennis star Sania Mirza is now looking forward to give her best in the next month’s Asian Games in Guangzhou.

"We are going to try our best to win as many medals as possible at the Asian Games. In sports you never know what happens. But we are going to give our best," Sania said, when asked on chances of winning medals at the upcoming Asian Games, scheduled to take place in Guangzhou, China from November 12 to 27.

Sania, who scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman tennis player to win three medals -- one gold and two silver -- in the previous edition of the Asian Games at Doha in 2006, is keen on continuing her good run in the Asian Games.

"Asian Games is going to be lot tougher than the Commonwealth Games. Many top-20 players would come to play there. But every time I have gone to the Asian Games (Busan and Doha) I have come back with medals. So, I hope I can do the same this time around as well," the 24-year-old said.

Sania, who had also partnered Leander Paes in clinching the mixed doubles bronze in the Busan Asian Games, said, "I have one more tournament to play before going into Asian Games. I have to try and win lot of medals this time also."

The Hyderabadi, who is currently ranked 136, has seen her ranking on a gradual decline and is likely to see it sink even further in the coming days, but she had a perfect explanation for it.

"My concentration for the whole year has been on the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. Now CWG is over and I am happy that it was successful Games not just for me but for Andhra Pradesh and whole of India. I have played really well in CWG," she said adding, "Playing for the country is the priority for me and that’s what I’m focusing on right now."

Sania, who won a silver after losing to top-seeded Australian Anastasia Rodionova in the women’s singles final at the Delhi Games, when asked if she could have won the gold, she said, "Of course. That was the plan. At 7-6 (3) in the third set, it’s not about tennis, it’s more about luck.

"CWG was very special for us, because it was in India. It was particularly special for me, because I played in India after a long time. Tennis was included for the first time and it’s not there for the next time and I’m lucky that I was a part of it. I am happy that I could win two medals."

Speaking on the Commonwealth Games, Sania said, "India proved a lot of people wrong by successfully holding the mega event. In fact the opening and the closing ceremonies were really great. I am happy and proud we could host such a good show."

PCB's Legal Action Against British Tabloid

The Pakistan Cricket Board is considering legal action against British tabloid The Sun after the International Cricket Council cleared its players of allegations of wrongdoing during a limited-overs international against England at The Oval.

PCB legal adviser Tafazzul Rizvi said on Tuesday that he was consulting lawyers in Britain regarding a possible defamation case on behalf of the players.

The Sun reported the story "in such a crude manner that we think they have a case to answer, Rizvi said.

The ICC investigated information passed on by The Sun, which suggested a scoring pattern in Pakistan’s innings was prearranged during the September match, before clearing the players.

Rizvi said the PCB had considered legal action from day one. "And now with ICC clearing the match, we are looking at the legal field and it is certainly under our serious consideration, he said.

Pakistan players were accused of spot fixing during the scandal-filled tour of England, where it also played a test series against Australia.

The ICC suspended three cricketers -- Salman Butt, Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Aamer -- after another British tabloid ’The News of the World’ accused them of accepting money for bowling predetermined no-balls during the Lord’s test match against England.

All three appealed their suspensions, but Asif later withdrew his appeal. The ICC will hear appeals from Butt and Amir in Dubai on Oct. 30-31.

Earlier this month, the ICC also gave the PCB a deadline of 30 days to shore up its ability to prevent match fixing or face further, unspecified action.

The PCB also agreed not to support or defend "tainted players. As a result, all the three suspended players have to defend their own cases.

The Pakistan team selected for the series against South Africa in the United Arab Emirates starting this week had to sign up to a strict code of conduct before leaving for the tour.

The series begins with a Twenty20 international later Tuesday at Abu Dhabi.

The upcoming three-Test series against New Zealand will give Tendulkar ample opportunities to get to the magical mark and Harbhajan is hoping the Mumbai batting icon will touch the mark in the first Test at Ahmedabad.

"It’s going to be the biggest achievement to notch century number 50 in Tests. I am looking forward to the part of the celebration. Hope he gets it at Motera," the Indian spin wizard said.

"He has a lot of milestones to his name. But this is going to be the biggest. Hats off to him. He has shown us that nothing is impossible," Harbhajan said.

India play a three-Test, five-ODI series against New Zealand beginning with Motera match from November 4-8.

Harbhajan also termed a media report in London’s ’Sunday Times’ as rubbish for claiming that ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ASCU) was probing into Suresh Raina’s involvement with a woman allegedly linked to bookies.

"This is all rubbish. Hum cricket ke liye jaan de dete hain. (We don’t even care for our lives while playing cricket) It’s very sad to hear all this. These are all rubbish," Harbhajan said.

The star-off spinner also said he has happy memories with Kolkata and is looking forward to play in the World Cup early next year.

"The Eden is really special to me, there is no match here till the World Cup. I am really looking forward to play here," he said.

Mega Chiranjeevi and Allu Aravind rightly used the occasion of ‘Orange Audio Release’ for their political mileage. It is known that a few months ago hero Rajasekhar and Jeevita alleged that there is lot of mischief going on in Chiranjeevi Blood Bank.

But Allu Aravind came up now with the news that state government has released a Press Note that Chiranjeevi Blood Bank is clean and neat and there is no iota of mischief in that. Anchor Suma read that from Orange audio release dais.

Sources say that Allu Aravind influenced the government to release this instantly to announce this on the dais when millions of people watch on TV sets.

Chiranjeevi also said emotionally, “It is our pride to receive this feedback from Government. I only promise that neither Chiranjeevi nor any of his family members make the fans down their heads. You know some people have thrown mud on our Blood Bank with their anger. The anger should be useful for society, but not harmful. You, the fans have answered them back by donating blood more aggressively in recent times. Thankyou for all of you”.

Well, that’s how politician Chiru is coming out these days. This is an attempt to pamper the fans as Chiru realized that he has been losing strong fans’ support in politics.

Vivek Oberoi Paid Homage To Paritala Ravi

  • Rattha Charitram new (21)

Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi Monday visited Andhra Pradesh’s Anantapur district and paid homage to former legislator Paritala Ravi, whose character he has played in Ram Gopal Varma’s new film "Rakta Charitra".

Vivek visited Paritala Ghat and offered floral tributes to the former minister and Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leader, who was gunned down by his rivals in Anantapur in 2005.

Supporters of Paritala family and fans welcomed Vivek. He was taken around the town in a convoy.

Greeting people in Telugu, the actor said it was satisfying for him to play the character of Paritala Ravi. He said he was overwhelmed by the fans’ response to the movie.

Vivek’s visit to the town is significant as director Ram Gopal Varma had to cancel his visit Friday.

The trilingual film in Telugu, Hindi and Tamil revolves around the feud between families of gangster-turned-politicians Paritala Ravi and Suryanarayana Reddy alias Maddelachervu Suri. It stars Vivek Oberoi, Surya and Shatrughan Sinha in key roles.

Ravi was gunned down in 2005 allegedly by the followers of Congress leader Suri. Suri was allegedly involved in the bomb blast in Hyderabad’s posh Jubilee Hills.

Suri earlier made an attempt to kill Ravi in 1997 at the Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad. Though Ravi escaped unhurt, 25 people were killed and many injured in the bomb blast.

Anantapur district is part of the backward Rayalaseema region, notorious for factional killings. Factions backed by political parties have been engaged in bloody battles for decades for supremacy in Andhra Pradesh villages, especially in Anantapur district.

The movie triggered a row much before the release with peace activists and NGOs opposing it on the ground that it could lead to a fresh spell of violence.

Locals also raised objection to Varma using the name of the district in the film. The protests forced him to change the name to Anandapuram.

Following protest by TDP workers Friday, Varma agreed to delete objectionable scenes allegedly projecting former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao in poor light in the movie.

The TDP leaders alleged that Varma projected Rao as the one who encouraged factional violence by inducting Paritala Ravi into the party.

If my mind was set, I knew I would do it, come what may. That ways I have learned to take life in my stride and accept the ups and downs. I never get unfazed. It is this quality that has made me enjoy life with all its twist and turns. I approach life with a lot of positivity. I was overweight as a kid but I always thought that I was the best girl in the whole wide world. Whatever I have achieved in life so far is because of this attitude and I’m very proud of myself.

I have slogged it out to reach wherever I am today. I make sure that I’m constantly looking to improve myself as a human being and as an actor. I think one should just look at improving oneself instead of trying to ape others or finding faults with others. I was and will not be like that ever.

I try to make the most in hand and enjoy situations that I am in and that includes work during hectic schedules. I chose to become an actor and imagine if I didn’t enjoy being one, I just wouldn’t be as happy. Such is the case with life. Be who you want to be and it will bring you happiness.

Even as Sun Pictures stepped in as the producer of his ‘Enthiran: The Robot’ a couple of years ago, superstar Rajnikanth had announced that he won’t be taking any payment as fee from the company till the film was completed. True to his stature and image, the superstar kept up his word and took his payment only recently, after the theatrical release of the film worldwide on 1st October.

Rajni, typical of a ‘perfect’ and law-abiding citizen, had reportedly paid off all his Income Tax and took the fee. Rajni is among the few actors in the country who pay their taxes promptly and in time. Sources close to the Sun network said that Rajni took his money in an ‘accountable’ manner (sans any ‘black money’) and paid his taxes promptly before taking the payment.

Rajni didn’t even demand the ‘distribution’ rights of some specific distribution areas as he had done earlier. Kalanithi Maran, who runs Sun Network, is said to have fulfilled Rajni’s wishes by deducting the taxes and paying them before paying the fee to Rajnikanth.

    Hats off to Rajni!
